For as long as I can remember, I knew I wanted to be a teacher. Teaching is such a privilege because it combines loving God, loving teaching and loving kids.
In 1999 I joined the staff at Grandville Christian School, having taught the previous nine years at Plymouth Christian. Throughout the years I have taught a variety of grade levels, including kindergarten, and 4th, 5th and 6th grades. As a child, I attended Grandville Calvin Christian Schools, as did my husband, and received my teaching degree from Calvin College. My graduate work has been at both GVSU and Western University.
In addition to teaching, my husband and I have been blessed with 5 boys. Besides teaching and spending time with my family, I am an avid runner. I’ve been running longer than I’ve been teaching. I’ve lost count of the number of road races I’ve run, but I definitely know the number of marathons – 14.
There are 3 quotes that I try to weave into every part of my teaching, my classroom, and my interactions with students. The first is from Ps. 139:14 “I will praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made. The second, from Max Lucado’s book, You Are Special, is “I made you and I don’t make mistakes”. And the third is from the book Wonder, “Always choose to be kinder than is necessary”. The classroom climate I strive for is that each student will understand that he/she is a unique child of God and that they will see that in every other student as well.
