Teaching children and showing them God’s creation day in and day out is a privilege I love and never take for granted!  I have been teaching at CCHS since 2000, accepting a position here straight out of Calvin College where I majored in Biology and minored in Chemistry.  I am also a Westside Christian School graduate and a Grand Rapids Christian High School graduate.  I am married to Anna Marie Adema, the choir assistant at CCHS, and we have three children attending Grandville Calvin Christian Schools.  

I love music (playing and listening to), softball, reptiles, Michigan sports of all varieties, and candy.  I also love Colossians 1: 9-12 “We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives,[e] 10 so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, 11 being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, 12 and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you[f] to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light.”

Music has been a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember. Having the honor and privilege of helping others grown in its appreciation, craft, development, enjoyment, performance, and ultimately love and worship of God through it is my heart, joy, and prayer; I truly believe this is God’s call for me and I do not take it lightly. God has graciously provided me with many opportunities and means through the years to grow and develop as a pianist, accompanist, vocalist, choir member, church choir director, as well as private, group, and classroom instructor.

I grew up in South Carolina, but left the warmth of the South to major in English, Music (with a concentration in Vocal Performance), and Theatre at Calvin College. Since then, I have worked in areas as diverse as accounting, administrative assistance, newsletter publication, and church secretary to my longest commitment (15+ years) of worship coordinating and leading at the inner-city church which I have attend since college, and where I met my husband, Nate, who is also blessed to work, minister, and serve in God’s kingdom here at GCCS.

I was officially hired by GCCS in the fall of 2014, most specifically to help with the middle school and high school choirs. I also oversee the accounting aspects of the music students’ tour fundraising along with other administrative details and responsibilities specific to the music department.

God has blessed me with a wonderful husband and three treasures for children. He has also filled me with a huge desire and passion to see prayer mobilized, helping people of all ages become not only people who pray but people of prayer– men, women, and children after God’s own heart. The life verse God laid on my heart during my own high school years directly connects to transformational prayer: “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is– his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:2 (NIV) I pray this not just for myself, but for all believers in my sphere of influence. I am on a lifelong journey of daily asking God to renew my mind, so that I can at all times live in His truth and with the complete peace of Christ that passes all understanding. May He guide and guard you and yours.

Dinelsa Alberty-Aybar

Spanish

Mrs. Dinelsa Alberty-Aybar comes to us from the Dominican Republic and will be teaching Spanish Immersion US History, Spanish Language Arts 9 and AP Spanish. She is married and has two children: Johan, 19 and Grace, 18. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Modern Languages and a Masters in School Administration. For the last 21 years, she has served as a Spanish coordinator and teacher at Santiago Christian School, an international school. Mrs. Alberty-Aybar loves working with high school students because they are the most creative and fascinating group with which one can work. She believes working with teenagers requires determination, creativity, love, and a lot of patience, which makes it the most gratifying work in the world. Her favorite Bible verse is, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go” Joshua 1:9. She is very excited to meet and work with you and your children at Grandville Calvin Christian School.

Mrs. Kristi Baker is the GCCS Communications & Marketing Director as well as CCHS Event Planner and Project Manager. She will work in the HS office. Mrs. Baker holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communication from Michigan State University and a Master of Arts in Organizational Change Leadership from Western Michigan University. She has several years of experience in marketing and communications working for a Fortune 500 company. She is a Sunday school teacher at her church and loves helping children find their love of God. “For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline” 2 Timothy 1:7. She lives in Jenison with her husband Steve, two stepdaughters Gabi and Alayna, their son Bryson, and French bulldog Bella.

In 2012 I joined the staff at CCHS.   Being  blessed by the students and parents that come through our office is one of the favorite parts of my job.  One of my goals is to make each person that walks into the office feel valued.

I am an alumni from Calvin Christian High School and Calvin College.  I have a degree in Social Work and worked at Wedgwood Christian Services for 22 years in a variety of positions.    I was not looking to leave Wedgwood but when I saw the job at Calvin, I knew I was being called here.

My husband, Rodney, works as a commissioned pastor for Community Recovery.   We have two children, Emma and Samuel  who both attend Grandville Calvin Christian Schools.  

I enjoy reading, scrapbooking, walking, cottaging, beaching, and cardio dance fitness.

After graduating from Calvin College in 2014 with a BA in secondary education (History and Socials Studies major and French minor), I taught one year at the West Michigan Aviation Academy in Grand Rapids.  

I believe Christian education is essential to raise up the next leaders of the Kingdom of God. I hope to teach my students discernment, compassion, and awareness of their neighbors. As a history teacher, themes of justice, the forward movement of history and the hope for the second coming teach so much about how each of us is to live our lives here in this world as preparation for heaven.

One verse that I love is Acts 20:24  – “However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.”

My husband, Joel, and I are both graduates of Calvin Christian High School.  I love to run road races, read books, watch the Tigers, visit the zoo, and being outside whether it is camping or sledding.

I have worked at Calvin since 1986. God has been in charge of my career path from the beginning. Out of college I fully intended to take a job offer in Tennessee when my future mother-in-law suggested I look into Calvin.  I was hired to teach 8th grade Language Arts, and I had my future brother-in-law in class my first year!  Along my teaching trail I have taught 7th and 8th grade Language Arts, American Literature A and B, College Writing, World Literature, English Literature and even Algebra B.  At the middle school I have coached basketball and track. At the high school I have coached JV baseball, JV football, and I was the varsity football coach for thirteen years. In 1992 I became the Athletic Director.

I attended South Christian High School and received a B.A. degree in Education and English from Calvin College. I earned my Masters degree in Secondary Administration from M.S.U. My beautiful wife, Mary,  teaches kindergarten at Grandville Christian. We have four incredible children and one son-in-law, and each one of them has had the opportunity to have a  fantastic Grandville Calvin Christian education.

I am also a licensed builder and my hobby has been building houses for our family to live in. Also I love to read, watch M.S.U. sports, and work in my yard.  One of my favorite passages deals with trusting God today and tomorrow. Matthew 6:19-34, especially the summation in verses 33 and 34.  “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

In 2017, my husband’s job caused us to move to the Grand Rapids area. At the time, I taught art at Hamady High School in the Westwood Heights Schools District in Flint, MI. Feeling overwhelmed at the thought of finding a new job opportunity, I focused on Jeremiah 29:11-13, For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.  You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart”.

During this trial and constant prayer, God revealed his plan to me.  Becoming the new high school art teacher/culinary arts teacher is exactly what He had in mind. I am truly blessed here and thankful for all the teaching opportunities I’ve had at Grandville Calvin Christian. Before this dream of mine became a reality I married my husband in August of 2013, went to and graduated from University of Michigan-Flint in 2014, and adopted two kittens in 2015 (Mascot and Mittens).

Currently, I enjoy reading, sewing, and watching Aaron and his rugby team, The Lansing Crisis, play in the fall.

I truly enjoy my time teaching here at Calvin Christian. Each day brings a new opportunity to mesh the two passions in my life: my zest for teaching/encouraging students, and the joy of spreading the redeeming message of Jesus Christ.  My goal is to walk alongside my students throughout high school, focusing on strengths and teaching strategies that will foster independence and self-advocacy.

I received my Bachelor and Master degrees from Grand Valley State University in the area of Special Education with an endorsement in Learning Disabilities.  Bridgeway Community Church is my home church and I enjoy teaching Sunday school every month to two and five-year-olds. My favorite pastimes include playing with my two children and reading. Additionally, I lead a local women’s book club group in Rockford.  Each day I try to live out this verse from Philippians 4:6, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”

I grew up in Midland Park, New Jersey — a small town in northeast New Jersey, thirty minutes outside of New York City.  I attended Eastern Christian Schools my whole life and then came to Michigan to attend Calvin College. After graduating from Calvin College with a degree in Physical Education and Health, I attended Western Michigan University, where I received my master’s degree in Sports Management.  While at Western Michigan, I taught four to five college PE classes per semester for four semesters.

I firmly believe that Christian education allows students to think deeply about their beliefs and helps shape them into people who can make a positive impact on our society.  I also believe that sports impacts a person’s life beyond actually playing the game. It is my goal to help students realize how much sport and exercise can positively influence both their everyday life and their spiritual life.  

My favorite Bible verse is Habakkuk 1:5 “Look at the nations and watch, and be utterly amazed, for I am going to something great in your day, that you would not believe, even if you were told.”  

I enjoy spending time with friends, getting to know people, and coaching, watching, and playing sports.

Seeing young people discover their gifts and talents over the course of 4 years, and helping students see the logic and creativity present in mathematics is the amazing opportunity that I am privileged to experience. After receiving my Bachelor’s Degree from Calvin College, I received my Master’s Degree from Dordt College.

My wife,  Andrea, and I have three young children that keep us busy.  In my spare time, I enjoy running, reading, working on yard projects, and watching Survivor.  Previously I coached basketball and tennis.

A favorite verse is Philippians 4: 4-7.  4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

This is my 5th year of working at Calvin Christian. I taught at Allendale Christian School for 35 years, spending several summers working with the Michigan Middle School Math Project and coaching the Mathcounts team.  In addition to leading sectionals at MCTM and the Christian Educators Association convention, I coached a variety of sports at Allendale.  I received my Bachelor’s Degree in secondary education from Calvin College with a mathematics major, followed by my Master’s Degree in secondary education from Western Michigan University.  

In addition to teaching, I enjoy playing his baritone horn, singing, reading, and various sports activities.

My favorite verse and motivation in all I do is Colossians 3:23—”Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men.”

Some of the fastest, rewarding  hours in my week are spent at CCHS.   It is a joy to help prepare the schedule for the games, meets and matches our athletes compete in.  What a privilege it is to see Calvin Christian sports from this perspective!  We are truly blessed to have an Athletic Director who sets a solid foundation and vision for our school’s athletics, and dedicated, caring coaches who take this vision and teach and train our children every day.  We serve a great God who deserves our very best.  Each time our athletes put on a uniform with the name “Calvin Christian” on the front, they have the privilege of reflecting our school and the awesome God we serve.

I have an Associates Degree in Business from Grand Rapids Community College.  My previous experience came from many years working in the Chief of Police’s office in the City of Wyoming.  This is a very different environment to say the least!  My husband, Doug, and I have four children who attend Grandville Calvin Christian School.  

I have many Bible verses that are special to me; but in the context of my job, I would like to share Colossians 3:23-24.  “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward.  It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”

It is a true joy to come here each day and to love and learn with such amazing students, families and colleagues. God has blessed me with many years of excellent training in Christian Education. Prior to serving at Calvin Christian, I served at Holland Christian Schools for thirteen years, as a social studies teacher, Gifted and Talented Coordinator and Curriculum Specialist. I attended high school at Holland Christian and received my undergraduate degree from Calvin College in Secondary Education in History, Science and Theatre. I received my graduate degree from Grand Valley State University in Educational Leadership. In all of these places God blessed me with Christian teachers who taught me to love Him first and to serve others.

I owe all I am to my Savior and I thank Him for also placing very special people in my life. I have been married to my best friend, Brian, for seventeen years. We have three beautiful children. Silas, Keira and Simeon,  all students at Grandville Christian School. As a family, we love to bike, swim, picnic at the zoo and experience God and His beautiful creation in all that we do.

I entered education because I felt God’s strong calling on my life to care for every child that I can. I believe children can be inspired to see God in everything, to desire God in all they do and to serve Him and allow Him to use them to transform the world for Jesus Christ. One of my favorite verses, read at Brian and I’s wedding, is Matthew 6:33, “But seek first His Kingdom and his righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well.” I pray that prayer each morning, seeking God’s Kingdom and not my own that day. This is also my prayer for students. I believe this is why Christian Education exists. Each day we teach students this is not about them, but about an amazing God who chose to let them be a part of the most amazing story.

I am a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School and Calvin College.  I gradated from Calvin in December 2015 and received a degree in K-12 Special Education: Cognitive Impairment and K-8 Elementary Education.  After graduating I served as a long-term substitute at Calvin Christian High School and am incredibly grateful to now be serving here in a permanent position!

Teaching special education has always been something I have been interested in.  I grew up with five adopted uncles and aunts with varying cognitive, emotional, and physical impairments.  I have grown up with them and watched them grow into incredible, confident adults with great talent and faith in Christ.  As a teacher, I am so excited to watch my students’ confidence in themselves, their talents, and their faith grow during our time together!
My husband, Eric, and I met at Calvin College.  Outside of teaching I enjoy traveling, reading, running, playing sports, and spending time with family and friends.

I have been working in the Inclusion program since 2016 and love discovering each student’s personality and unique needs. My goal is to provide personal, one-on-one care that will help prepare students for the next phase in their lives. I have an associate degree in biblical counseling and am pursuing my BA in theology (with a concentration in pastoral counseling) while raising my two children.

Growing up in Jenison in a large family (4 brothers and 3 sisters),  my dad was a bulldozer operator, but digging holes in the dirt didn’t appeal to me like it did for a few of my brothers.  After graduating from Unity Christian High School, I earned a BA in Biology and Chemistry at Calvin College.  Later I earned a Masters degree from MSU in Biological Science.  

 

During my years at CCHS, I have taught various science and math classes, have been the Student Council advisor, and have coached several soccer teams.  One of my favorite things about teaching chemistry is seeing students get excited while watching a cool chemical demonstration or performing an interesting lab activity.  As assistant principal, I see my role as an extension of the parents, guiding and discipling young people as they grow and mature.  

 

When I am not at school, you can find me spending time with my wife Janey, the director of GCCS’s Polka Dot Garden Preschools, and my three sons, Bretton, Grant, and Reece.  As a family, we enjoy camping, spending time at our family cabin in northern Michigan, along with watching Tigers baseball or Spartan football and basketball.  To refresh my soul, I fly-fish for trout in local streams.  I also enjoy reading, completing crossword puzzles, and listening to classic music (classic rock, that is).  

 

My prayer for my students is the prayer of the Apostle Paul for the Philippians in Philippians 1:9-11:  “And this is my prayer:  that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ–to the glory and praise of God.”

As the band instructor for our elementary, middle and high school students at GCCS, there’s nothing I love more than helping  students develop their passion for music. In addition to teaching band, I also teach middle school exploratories and private lessons. I am a 2009 graduate of Calvin College with a bachelor’s degree in Music Education. Previously, I taught for four years at Rockford Christian (Rockford, IL), and most recently at Ada Christian and Byron Center Christian schools in Grand Rapids.  My husband, James, and I live on the west side of Grand Rapids with our two boys, Sam (age 4) and Bennett (age 2).

I have been working in the maintenance industry for around 20 years now. I enjoy interacting with all the staff at Calvin Christian and I am thankful to be a part of the team here.

I have an awesome wife that I have been married to going on 22 years now and two beautiful daughters. I enjoy hunting, fishing and being in nature. I am thankful to the Lord God for all the blessings He has given to me, which are too many for me to count. I look toward the The Lord to use me according to His will each day. Two of my favorite verses that I hold to are  2 Corinthians 12:9 and Philippians 4:13.

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.” –2 Corinthians 12:9

After graduating from Calvin College with degrees in English and Communications, I decided to teach English in China for a year before heading to graduate school. What started as a year turned into thirty-one years.  China became my home — a place where I met my husband Keith and where we raised our four children. Besides teaching at the Xinjiang Teacher’s College, I also tutored groups of graduate students and young moms, and homeschooled my children.  In 2008, Keith and I opened Rendezvous Cafe where we served western food, cakes, and coffees to not only local Chinese patrons, but also to a diverse international crowd from countries such as Pakistan, India, Kazakhstan, and Saudi Arabia. In February of this year, our visa application for working in China was rejected by the Chinese government leading us to resettle in the States.  I am thankful for the opportunity to work in the inclusion program and pray that each student would “grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ”

Matt Jewett

Before coming to Calvin Christian, I taught English for ten years at Kalamazoo Christian High School where I commuted from Wyoming.  Before that, I worked as an adjunct instructor at Boston College, Calvin College, and Grand Rapids Community College.  During this time, I also worked as a part time adult ed teacher at the Van Buren County jail.  

I have my Master’s in English from Boston College and my Bachelor’s degree with a double major in English and Communication Arts from Cornerstone University.  

I am married to Sara Jewett and have two high energy but wonderful children: Blake and Adele.  Sara is the diaconal coordinator at Calvary Christian Reformed Church where she focuses on benevolence, community relationships, and outreach.  I am the discipleship elder and a youth group leader at Calvary CRC.  Netflix tells me that I love “mind bending science fiction”, “period pieces featuring a strong female lead,” and “fight the system movies.”  I also love binge reading, playing chess with my son, interpretive dancing with my daughter, directing theatre, and eating pizza rolls.  

As teacher I want my student to “own” their thoughts.  I don’t want their thoughts to exist in a bubble but to have them participate in discourse communities that go beyond the walls of the classroom.  I want to prepare them with the right questions to ask their culture and their communities.  And, most importantly, I want them to “own” their faith walk and to help disciple them into a deeper relationship with God.  A verse that I’m still trying to live out is Philippians 4:12: “I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation.”

Kristyn Kamps

Director and Humanities Advisor of Ambassador High

She earned her Bachelor’s in Education with minors in social studies and English from Calvin College and a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction and an Instructional Coaching endorsement from Michigan State University. She has taught English, Social Studies, Science and Technology in Christian schools for almost 30 years. For the last eight years, she has served as a National Faculty Member for the Buck Institute for Education/PBLWorks, traveling and training teachers in project based learning. In addition, she has worked as an instructional coach for the last two years at Grandville Calvin Christian. Kristyn, and her husband, Tim, live in Grand Rapids, and have two adult daughters, Jessica and Jaclyn, and three grandkids, Will, Harper, and Evelyn. She firmly believes what happens in the classroom should be relevant, authentic, and directly connected to the world outside the classroom. Ms. Karel has a passion for working with adolescents and families, and enjoys helping young people tackle the challenges of growing mentally, spiritually, and academically. The teenage years can be challenging for both students and parents alike, and she desires to help students grow into all that God desires for them to be. Outside of work, she participates in local community theatre, and can often be seen in various plays and musicals in the Grand Rapids area. Her favorite bible verse is Colossians 3:15, “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.”

I have the wonderful privilege of teaching Language Arts at Calvin Christian Middle School. I have a passion for sharing God’s gift of language with middle school students, and it is an honor to come alongside students during this exciting time in their lives as they grow and develop their gifts. Encouraging students to become lifelong learners, thinkers, writers, readers, and followers of Christ is a calling that I embrace with joy every day! I am very blessed to be a part of this Calvin Christian Community!

I graduated from Calvin College in 2009 and am working toward my master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction at Calvin as well. God has blessed me with a wonderful husband, Kristopher, who coaches cross country at Kalamazoo College and track at Grand Rapids Christian. We live on the Northwest side of Grand Rapids with our crazy dog, Ellis, and our cat, Minna. In my spare time I love reading, gardening, traveling, outdoor adventures, board games, crossword puzzles, and making music. Kristopher and I are both involved with working with young people at our church, Oakdale Park CRC.

A Bible passage that has been powerful in my life is from Paul’s prayer for the Ephesians in Ephesians 3: I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love,  may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.  Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us,  to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever!

I graduated from Calvin College in 2000 with a BA in Spanish and Religion & Theology. After graduating, I taught Spanish and Bible at Rehoboth Christian High School in NM for two years before moving overseas. I spent seven years working in missions, primarily in China. During that time I studied Chinese, which was an experience that significantly shaped my approach to language instruction. After returning to Michigan, I taught Spanish at Byron Center Christian Middle School for seven years before joining the staff at CCHS in 2018.

God has put a deep love in my heart for people, languages and cultures. I’m also passionate about discipleship, prayer and missions. These things fuel my passion in the classroom! I have lived in Europe, Latin America and Asia. God has used those experiences to teach me to open my heart to what is foreign, to embrace what is different and to respond to God’s call to welcome and learn from others. I love encouraging students to do the same!

My husband and I have four children that attend GCCS. We love adventuring together whether overseas, to a new state or camping here in the beautiful state of Michigan. I also love cooking, hiking, gardening and spending time  with my family.

Jason Lawrence

Ambassador High STEM advisor and CCHS STEM teacher

Ambassador High STEM advisor and CCHS STEM teacher. He received his degree in broad field science from Concordia University Wisconsin and started his teaching career in California. Jason comes to us from Orange County, California, where he was named one of the top 25 teachers in the area. Jason is a STEM and Social Studies teacher who has taught at a few different Christian schools in California. He has training in teaching through modeling and Project Based Learning. His hobbies include building and woodworking. He is very excited to return to Michigan where he grew up and to live near his brother and sister in Grand Rapids. Jason and his wife, Chelsea, have two girls ages 3 and 1. Paul tells us in Romans 1:20, “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made…”  Jason believes science teaches us about how great God is, about who He made us to be, and that it is our responsibility to understand and protect the gift of nature. Part of being made in God’s image is that we are called to create and invent just as our Father did. He thinks we all can discover those truths through science.

I thoroughly enjoy the diversity in my work, sharing my passion for my Lord, music and competition, and the opportunities to build relationships with the families at Grandville Calvin Christian Schools.  I am blessed and thankful to have taught here since 2006. In addition to teaching high school choir and orchestra, I also teach middle school choir and orchestra and elementary school orchestra and coach the boys Varsity  and girls JV soccer team.

I am a graduate of Hudsonville and Unity Christian School, and a graduate of Calvin College with a degree in Vocal Music Education.  I am currently a member at LaGrave Ave CRC.

When not teaching, I enjoy my time outdoors golfing, fishing, camping, or sometimes just walking while gazing at God’s incredible creation.  My favorite passage is Psalm 100:  “Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth.  Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful sounds.  Know that the Lord is God.  It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.  Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name.  For the Lord is good, and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.”

Although I was born in Grand Rapids, I grew up in California and Florida. I attended Calvin College where I received a degree in Engineering in 2000. While I was finishing that program I felt God strongly calling me into education, so after graduation I continued at Calvin where I got my secondary teaching endorsement with a major in Mathematics and a minor in Physics. I had the privilege of student teaching at Calvin Christian HS in the fall of 2001. After completeing this assignment I was offered a full time position, and have since taught Physics, Precalculus, FST, Statistics, Geometry, and have now started teaching Algebra as well. I have also received a Master’s Degree in Mathematics from Grand Valley State University.

During my time at Calvin I have also coached over 30 seasons in a variety of sports (golf, basketball, track, and bowling) and been a Young Life leader. I consider a wonderful privilege and responsibility to be member of this community at Calvin Christian HS.
I am a member of Fellowship CRC, enjoy gardening, cooking, bicycling, running, and swimming.

My life has been blessed by being part of the Calvin Christian School community since October of 2003.  My post-high school education was one semester at Davenport College and then I felt led to look for an actual secretarial job rather than continue with school.  My secretarial career has been uniquely all in school-related positions at Reformed Bible Institute/College (now Kuyper College), Ferris State College, Calvin College, and Creston Christian Elementary/Middle School.  The circle of working in each grade/age related field of education has now been completed since coming to Calvin Christian High School.

 

I enjoy interacting with people and my position at CCHS allows me to meet, greet, and assist people who come through the doors of our office.  My goal is to see each person I meet as a person uniquely created by God and to convey God’s love to them in the way that I assist them, no matter what that task may be.  A favorite little quote/prayer I strive to live by is “Lord, make my life a window for your light to shine through and a mirror to reflect your love to every person I meet.”  

 

I’ve been married for 43 years on September 9, 2015 to my best friend.  Jerry & I have a married daughter, Rachel, and they have blessed us with our one grandchild, Leah, who is almost 6 years old.  Our son, James, lives and works in Tokyo, Japan.  We are actively involved in our church family at Blythefield CRC in Rockford where I am the Congregational Life Coordinator.  This involves creating, planning, and presenting opportunities and activities for our members to participate in which build relationships and help demonstrate encouragement and support to each other.  Favorite pastimes include playing the piano, reading, and hanging out with my granddaughter.  

 

My “life verse” can be found in Psalm 34:13-14a: But I will say, “You are my God; I will trust in You.  My times are in Your hands.”  God has my life’s journey all in His care and keeping.  Wow!  That’s pretty awesome to know.

When I was a child, I wanted to be an explorer when I grew up. Traveling with my family and living in places like Australia and Alaska allowed me to explore more than just geography. My parents encouraged me to research the history, culture, and literature of each place. My love for learning was born. As an adult, I want to pass on that love of learning to others.

After graduating from Trinity Christian College with a BA in Elementary Education and a minor in ESL, I taught English, history, and math to 5th graders at Lenawee Christian School and to 6th-8th graders at Sherwood Park (Grand Rapids Public Schools). I have also worked as an Academic Coach with Calvin College’s Entrada program.

My work with Entrada students, along with proofreading for Moody Publishers and my experiences as the mother of two college students, has enabled me to support seniors in the ESS program as they write their college essays and resumes. As an ESS Instructor, I also support all 9th-12th grade students in the ESS program as they explore content and find study skills that work for them. My goal is to guide students as they develop skills and knowledge that will help them be successful in high school, college/job training, and their careers.

It is an incredible blessing to be able to study the Bible together and ask big questions about what it means to follow Jesus and live in his Kingdom in today’s society. I hope my students leave my classes with a deeper love for Christ and a desire to take part in his “new creation” work as his Body. I began my career at Calvin Christian in 2009,  right out Calvin College, where I graduated with Religion and History majors. I am now currently pursuing a M.A. in Bible & Theology at Calvin Theological Seminary.

My wife, Abbie, is the After-School Care Director at Grandville Christian School. We have been married for five years and have two children who we love spending time with.

Hobbies and interests of mine include the Bible (!), reading, music, sports, and announcing CCHS football and basketball games.

A favorite passage of mine is Isaiah 52:7-10, specifically verse 7, which reads “How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of the messenger who announces peace, who brings good news, who announces salvation, who says to Zion, ‘Your God reigns.’”

I grew up in New Jersey where I attended Eastern Christian School.  I graduated from Calvin College in 1999 with a Biology Major, Chemistry Minor and a secondary education teaching certificate.  After Calvin I attended graduate school from 1999-2001 at Purdue University’s School of Agriculture where I completed a Masters in Biochemical Genetics.  I started teaching at Calvin Christian in 2015 after teaching at Purdue, Twin Lakes HS (Monticello, IN), West Ottawa HS and Holland Christian HS.  

My husband Mike and I were married in 1999.  We moved to Holland in 2003 to raise our children on his family’s farm.  We have 3 children, Henry, Anna and Luke who attend Zeeland Christian School.  We love spending time outside, especially any activity near or in a lake.  We are members of Providence Church where I have been active in Women’s ministry, teaching Sunday School and Small Groups.  

I love learning new things about Science and hope that excitement comes through in my classroom.  As I learn more I am continually amazed by the detailed way God has created us and the world around us.  In my classroom I strive to not only teach students Science but also how to take that knowledge and link it to our Biblical calling to be stewards of creation and our school mission of Loving, Learning and Serving.

I have the unique story that I have been a teacher at Calvin Christian two different times.  I began my teaching career here at Calvin and remained on staff for six years.  I then had a nine year stay at Holland Christian.  In 2010 I felt a strong calling by God to return to CCHS.  I have been teaching mathematics and serving as the registrar since my return to CCHS.  It is wonderful to have a career where I am confident God wants me to be and where I can use the gifts He has given me to serve others.  I am excited to be here to prepare students to see the gifts God has given them, develop their gifts, and begin to see where God is calling them to use their gifts in the future.

I earned my bachelor’s degree from Calvin College and my master’s degree from Grand Valley State University.  Currently at Calvin Christian I teach mathematics at the high school and serve as registrar for grades six through twelve.  I have also had roles as both the girls and boys varsity swim coach, head of chapel committee, and student council advisor.

My wife Becci and I were married in 1999.  We have three children.  I enjoy watching and participating in many different sports – especially soccer and swimming.  I am often involved in various activities at our church.  In addition, I spend some time as an adjunct instructor at Davenport University.

A verse that gives direction to my life is Colossians 3:17, “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”  It is great reminder that every moment of our lives is to bring glory to God and to praise Him for his amazing blessings to us.

I was born in Holland, Michigan, but moved to Taiwan when I was seven years old. I attended an international boarding school and lived in a dorm with sixteen high school students. A week after graduating from high school, I moved back to Michigan by myself for college.

After completing my teacher assisting at Northern Hills Middle School in Grand Rapids, I moved to Detroit to student teach at Henry Ford Academy. I graduated from Grand Valley with degrees in Secondary Education and English and minors in Physical Education and Applied Linguistics.

I love donuts and puppies and long naps in cars. I dream of hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, building a tiny-house, and running a marathon on the Great Wall of China. (These lists are not complete).

One of my favorite verses is Ephesians 3:20, where the Lord is described as someone “who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine.”

Teaching at Calvin Christian is what God has prepared me for and where God wants me right now. I grew up in a home where Dutch was spoken by my parents.  They thought that no one could understand their secrets. Little did they know that one of their kids had a knack for picking up languages. That background helped me learn Spanish and love it. I studied in Spain even before Calvin College had their international study abroad program. I have also studied in Mexico for several summers. I received my master’s degree in from The School for International Training in Brattleboro, Vermont. All of these experiences helped me to learn to speak and teach Spanish.

I have taught Spanish at every level possible, from high school, to homeschool, to college classes and then to preschool Spanish immersion. I am thankful to be back in the high school and work at Calvin Christian where we can laugh and learn from each other.

I am married to David Vander Sluis and we live in Holland. Dave is an electrician  We have three children, Sam, Becky and Mary.  We love family time together and hiking, walking along Lake Michigan and biking.

I felt a clear call into education while I was at Calvin College. I was blessed with my first job teaching high school Bible at Manhattan Christian School in Montana in 2003.  After four great years at MCHS, I took a job teaching 8th grade algebra and science at Westminster Christian Academy in St. Louis. Most recently, I taught 5-8th grade students math, science, and Bible at Jenison Christian School, where I taught for 8 years.  I finished up my Masters in School Counseling through GVSU in 2018, and was hired as the College and Career Counselor at CCHS. I feel blessed and excited to be serving students and families in this role. I am so thankful for a life-giving relationship with my savior Jesus Christ. God has poured out rich, undeserved  blessings in my life like my amazing wife Sheila, our four incredible kids, and opportunities to enjoy His creation as an outdoorsman, traveler, athlete, and musician.

Calvin Christian has been a great place to work since I joined the staff in 2007.  It is a joy to come to work each day and teach students that strive to understand God’s hand in the world around them and in their own lives.  I enjoy seeing students develop academically, spiritually, and emotionally over their high school careers as they become more confident, independent thinkers. 

I earned my Bachelor’s degree at Calvin College and my Master’s degree through Cornerstone University.  I am married to my husband, Nick, who has taught me to be a Maple Leafs fan.  In my spare time, I enjoy reading, walking my dog, playing cards, and hanging out with family and friends.  I attend Ada Bible Church, where I have been going for the last 15 years.  In all I do, I strive to live out Micah 6:8, “And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”

In 2012, I was called to teach at Calvin Christian High School. I have also been helping with the Student Leadership Committee and organizing CloseUp trips to Washington, D.C. In addition to teaching here, I also appreciate this community that has accepted and involved my family as we transplanted here and as all three of my children now attend, or graduated from, Grandville Calvin Christian Schools.
In 2012, I was called to teach at Calvin Christian High School. I have also been helping with the Student Leadership Committee and organizing CloseUp trips to Washington, D.C. In addition to teaching here, I also appreciate this community that has accepted and involved my family as we transplanted here and as all three of my children now attend, or graduated from, Grandville Calvin Christian Schools. Before Calvin Christian, I had the privilege of teaching and coaching in amazing Christian schools in diverse geographic and cultural contexts including Florida (1990-1992), New Mexico (1994-2008) and Indonesia (2008-2012).
My favorite verses are Matthew 28:19-20 (the Great Commission) and Micah 6:8. These verses concisely convict us to call others and ourselves to Biblical redemption and justice.

This year is the 17th year that I have worked as the janitor at Calvin Christian High School. As a student, I attended Phoenix Christian School, Allendale Christian School, and Unity Christian High School. I have always enjoyed being a sports fan, and I like to cheer for the Squires and help out in soccer, basketball, and track. I also enjoy Calvin College basketball.

One of my favorite activities is riding my bicycle long distances. Calvin Christian High School has been special to me because I get to interact with the students and staff. When I finished high school, my grandma made a needle point with a favorite Bible verse on it. “In his heart a man plans his course, but the LORD determines his steps.”  Proverbs 16:9
