Nate Adema

Biology, Media Discernment and Physiology

Teaching children and showing them God’s creation day in and day out is a privilege I love and never take for granted!  I have been teaching at CCHS since 2000, accepting a position here straight out of Calvin College where I majored in Biology and minored in Chemistry.  I am also a Westside Christian School graduate and a Grand Rapids Christian High School graduate.  I am married to Anna Marie Adema, the choir assistant at CCHS, and we have three children attending Grandville Calvin Christian Schools.

I love music (playing and listening to), softball, reptiles, Michigan sports of all varieties, and candy.  I also love Colossians 1: 9-12 “We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives,[e] 10 so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, 11 being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, 12 and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you[f] to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light.”

Anna Marie Adema

Music Assistant

Music has been a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember. Having the honor and privilege of helping others grown in its appreciation, craft, development, enjoyment, performance, and ultimately love and worship of God through it is my heart, joy, and prayer; I truly believe this is God’s call for me and I do not take it lightly. God has graciously provided me with many opportunities and means through the years to grow and develop as a pianist, accompanist, vocalist, choir member, church choir director, as well as private, group, and classroom instructor.

I grew up in South Carolina, but left the warmth of the South to major in English, Music (with a concentration in Vocal Performance), and Theatre at Calvin College. Since then, I have worked in areas as diverse as accounting, administrative assistance, newsletter publication, and church secretary to my longest commitment (15+ years) of worship coordinating and leading at the inner-city church which I have attend since college, and where I met my husband, Nate, who is also blessed to work, minister, and serve in God’s kingdom here at GCCS.

I was officially hired by GCCS in the fall of 2014, most specifically to help with the middle school and high school choirs. I also oversee the accounting aspects of the music students’ tour fundraising along with other administrative details and responsibilities specific to the music department.

God has blessed me with a wonderful husband and three treasures for children. He has also filled me with a huge desire and passion to see prayer mobilized, helping people of all ages become not only people who pray but people of prayer– men, women, and children after God’s own heart. The life verse God laid on my heart during my own high school years directly connects to transformational prayer: “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is– his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:2 (NIV) I pray this not just for myself, but for all believers in my sphere of influence. I am on a lifelong journey of daily asking God to renew my mind, so that I can at all times live in His truth and with the complete peace of Christ that passes all understanding. May He guide and guard you and yours.

Joy Betten

Administrative Assistant

In 2012 I joined the staff at CCHS.   Being  blessed by the students and parents that come through our office is one of the favorite parts of my job.  One of my goals is to make each person that walks into the office feel valued.

I am an alumni from Calvin Christian High School and Calvin College.  I have a degree in Social Work and worked at Wedgwood Christian Services for 22 years in a variety of positions.    I was not looking to leave Wedgwood but when I saw the job at Calvin, I knew I was being called here.

My husband, Rodney, works as a commissioned pastor for Community Recovery.   We have two children, Emma and Samuel  who both attend Grandville Calvin Christian Schools.

I enjoy reading, scrapbooking, walking, cottaging, beaching, and cardio dance fitness.

Kelli Boender

English, Global Studies, US History and World History, Softball Assistant Varsity Coach

After graduating from Calvin College in 2014 with a BA in secondary education (History and Socials Studies major and French minor), I taught one year at the West Michigan Aviation Academy in Grand Rapids.

I believe Christian education is essential to raise up the next leaders of the Kingdom of God. I hope to teach my students discernment, compassion, and awareness of their neighbors. As a history teacher, themes of justice, the forward movement of history and the hope for the second coming teach so much about how each of us is to live our lives here in this world as preparation for heaven.

One verse that I love is Acts 20:24  – “However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.”

My husband, Joel, and I are both graduates of Calvin Christian High School.  I love to run road races, read books, watch the Tigers, visit the zoo, and being outside whether it is camping or sledding,

Tom Bouma

Athletic Director

I have worked at Calvin since 1986. God has been in charge of my career path from the beginning. Out of college I fully intended to take a job offer in Tennessee when my future mother-in-law suggested I look into Calvin.  I was hired to teach 8th grade Language Arts, and I had my future brother-in-law in class my first year!  Along my teaching trail I have taught 7th and 8th grade Language Arts, American Literature A and B, College Writing, World Literature, English Literature and even Algebra B.  At the middle school I have coached basketball and track. At the high school I have coached JV baseball, JV football, and I was the varsity football coach for thirteen years. In 1992 I became the Athletic Director.

I attended South Christian High School and received a B.A. degree in Education and English from Calvin College. I earned my Masters degree in Secondary Administration from M.S.U. My beautiful wife, Mary,  teaches kindergarten at Grandville Christian. We have four incredible children and one son-in-law, and each one of them has had the opportunity to have a  fantastic Grandville Calvin Christian education.

I am also a licensed builder and my hobby has been building houses for our family to live in. Also I love to read, watch M.S.U. sports, and work in my yard.  One of my favorite passages deals with trusting God today and tomorrow. Matthew 6:19-34, especially the summation in verses 33 and 34.  “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

Dave Dekker

A.P. Calculus, Geometry and Pre-Calculus

Seeing young people discover their gifts and talents over the course of 4 years, and helping students see the logic and creativity present in mathematics is the amazing opportunity that I am privileged to experience. After receiving my Bachelor’s Degree from Calvin College, I received my Master’s Degree from Dordt College.

My wife,  Andrea, and I have three young children that keep us busy.  In my spare time, I enjoy running, reading, working on yard projects, and watching Survivor.  Previously I coached basketball and tennis.

A favorite verse is Philippians 4: 4-7.  4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Dave Denouden

Educational Support Assistant

This is my 5th year of working at Calvin Christian. I taught at Allendale Christian School for 35 years, spending several summers working with the Michigan Middle School Math Project and coaching the Mathcounts team.  In addition to leading sectionals at MCTM and the Christian Educators Association convention, I coached a variety of sports at Allendale.  I received my Bachelor’s Degree in secondary education from Calvin College with a mathematics major, followed by my Master’s Degree in secondary education from Western Michigan University.

In addition to teaching, I enjoy playing his baritone horn, singing, reading, and various sports activities.

My favorite verse and motivation in all I do is Colossians 3:23—”Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men.”

Mary Doornbos

Church History, New Testament Survey, Sociology, and Psychology

My passion for learning has been life long. I remember playing “school” before I was able to attend school.  My second grade teacher gave me a pencil that had “Calvin College” imprinted on it. Her words that echo in my mind were, “I think you are going to graduate from there and be a teacher.”

My parents never hesitated in their commitment to provide a Christian school education for their three children although it required great sacrifices on their part. They saw it as part of equipping us for a life of service in God’s Kingdom. I value what I learned at West Side Christian, Grand Rapids Christian High School, and Calvin College where I received my B.A. in education in 1981. My formal education continued at Michigan State University where I earned my M.A. in 1988.

According to some students I have been living under my desk at  Calvin Christian High School since I began teaching in 1981. It is a joy and privilege to be among students each day.

God has challenged me with the opportunity to teach Physical Education, Sociology, Psychology, US and World History, Physiology, New Testament and Church History.  One thing is true and that is that each student who walks into any one of those classrooms matters greatly to God.

I have wonderful godly parents, my dad who is in heaven and my mom who is my best friend. I have a sister who is also in heaven and the best big brother any little sister could ever hope for.

I have friends I call family and my family are my friends.

I enjoy being outside, mowing the lawn on angles, reading, helping others, traveling to Washington D.C. and Alaska and being with people who make me laugh. And I like Mickey Mouse (of course, there is a story behind that).

One of my favorite verses is: “Be still, and know that I am God” Psalm 46:10 In the rush and the noise there is nothing better than just stopping and recognizing who God is and knowing that He has all things in His loving hands. There is no place I would rather be than in His care.

Linda Eisma

Athletic Admin. Assist.

Some of the fastest, rewarding  hours in my week are spent at CCHS.   It is a joy to help prepare the schedule for the games, meets and matches our athletes compete in.  What a privilege it is to see Calvin Christian sports from this perspective!  We are truly blessed to have an Athletic Director who sets a solid foundation and vision for our school’s athletics, and dedicated, caring coaches who take this vision and teach and train our children every day.  We serve a great God who deserves our very best.  Each time our athletes put on a uniform with the name “Calvin Christian” on the front, they have the privilege of reflecting our school and the awesome God we serve.

I have an Associates Degree in Business from Grand Rapids Community College.  My previous experience came from many years working in the Chief of Police’s office in the City of Wyoming.  This is a very different environment to say the least!  My husband, Doug, and I have four children who attend Grandville Calvin Christian School.

I have many Bible verses that are special to me; but in the context of my job, I would like to share Colossians 3:23-24.  “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward.  It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”

Thelma Ensink

Principal

It is a true joy to come here each day and to love and learn with such amazing students, families and colleagues. God has blessed me with many years of excellent training in Christian Education. Prior to serving at Calvin Christian, I served at Holland Christian Schools for thirteen years, as a social studies teacher, Gifted and Talented Coordinator and Curriculum Specialist. I attended high school at Holland Christian and received my undergraduate degree from Calvin College in Secondary Education in History, Science and Theatre. I received my graduate degree from Grand Valley State University in Educational Leadership. In all of these places God blessed me with Christian teachers who taught me to love Him first and to serve others.

I owe all I am to my Savior and I thank Him for also placing very special people in my life. I have been married to my best friend, Brian, for seventeen years. We have three beautiful children. Silas, Keira and Simeon,  all students at Grandville Christian School. As a family, we love to bike, swim, picnic at the zoo and experience God and His beautiful creation in all that we do.

I entered education because I felt God’s strong calling on my life to care for every child that I can. I believe children can be inspired to see God in everything, to desire God in all they do and to serve Him and allow Him to use them to transform the world for Jesus Christ. One of my favorite verses, read at Brian and I’s wedding, is Matthew 6:33, “But seek first His Kingdom and his righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well.” I pray that prayer each morning, seeking God’s Kingdom and not my own that day. This is also my prayer for students. I believe this is why Christian Education exists. Each day we teach students this is not about them, but about an amazing God who chose to let them be a part of the most amazing story.

I joined the GCCS staff in 2013.  Because my music teaching duties split my time between the three campuses, I am privileged to teach and learn about students on many different parts of their journey.  I graduated Calvin College for K-12 music education.  In addition to my music teaching, I am a worship leader at Calvary CRC and the conductor of Jubal Brass.

My wife, Joanna, and I live in Kentwood with our daughter, one dog and three cats. I am passionate about: gun safety, the second amendment, personal finance and creating a family legacy, Harry Potter, and Super Mario Smash Bros.

Krista Gray

Educational Support Specialist, Volleyball JV Head Coach

I am a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School and Calvin College.  I gradated from Calvin in December 2015 and received a degree in K-12 Special Education: Cognitive Impairment and K-8 Elementary Education.  After graduating I served as a long-term substitute at Calvin Christian High School and am incredibly grateful to now be serving here in a permanent position!

Teaching special education has always been something I have been interested in.  I grew up with five adopted uncles and aunts with varying cognitive, emotional, and physical impairments.  I have grown up with them and watched them grow into incredible, confident adults with great talent and faith in Christ.  As a teacher, I am so excited to watch my students’ confidence in themselves, their talents, and their faith grow during our time together!
My husband, Eric, and I met at Calvin College.  Outside of teaching I enjoy traveling, reading, running, playing sports, and spending time with family and friends.

Mike Hoekwater

Chemistry

Growing up in Jenison in a large family (4 brothers and 3 sisters),  my dad was a bulldozer operator, but digging holes in the dirt didn’t appeal to me like it did for a few of my brothers.  After graduating from Unity Christian High School, I earned a BA in Biology and Chemistry at Calvin College.  Later I earned a Masters degree from MSU in Biological Science.

During my years at CCHS, I have taught various science and math classes, have been the Student Council advisor, and have coached several soccer teams.  One of my favorite things about teaching chemistry is seeing students get excited while watching a cool chemical demonstration or performing an interesting lab activity.  As assistant principal, I see my role as an extension of the parents, guiding and discipling young people as they grow and mature.

When I am not at school, you can find me spending time with my wife Janey, the director of GCCS’s Polka Dot Garden Preschools, and my three sons, Bretton, Grant, and Reece.  As a family, we enjoy camping, spending time at our family cabin in northern Michigan, along with watching Tigers baseball or Spartan football and basketball.  To refresh my soul, I fly-fish for trout in local streams.  I also enjoy reading, completing crossword puzzles, and listening to classic music (classic rock, that is).

My prayer for my students is the prayer of the Apostle Paul for the Philippians in Philippians 1:9-11:  “And this is my prayer:  that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ–to the glory and praise of God.”

Sara Hoeve

Instructional Coach, Communications & Marketing

n 2007 I joined the teaching staff at Calvin Christian.  I graduated from Calvin College with my BA in English and History.  I also received my Masters in English Education from Western Michigan.  Currently, I am taking classes for my Phd. in English Education at WMU.

As a teacher of writing and literature, my role is to help students embrace the God-given gift of language.  My English pedagogy centers around the belief that English classrooms must be a place where students feel invested, challenged and celebrated in their writing and reading.  My first goal is that my students are able to see themselves as writers, to be able to communicate their experience and ideas clearly and confidently, to feel as if they have something to say and the right to say it.  My second goal is for students to use these skills to understand the relationship between themselves and their world, to explore their identity and community.

My time away from school revolves around my husband Mitch, and our children, Grace, Austin and Jackson.  I keep busy doing laundry and driving my kids everywhere.  I also love to serve in the youth programs at Evergreen Ministries.  If I have free time, I enjoy my Book Club, camping and yoga.

Mike Jacobs

Graphic Communications, Engineering, Instructional Coach

I absolutely love being able to teach from a Christian perspective.  While teaching about God’s creation, it’s a joy to be able to explain just how much God must love us to set up such a wonderful creation to delight in and also be curious about.  Walking with students in their faith walk, sharing with them struggles and victories that we see around us every day, along with talking about science in the classroom is a true joy.

I am a graduate of Holland Christian High School.  After graduating from Dordt College with a degree in Biology and a Teaching Degree,  I received a Masters in Educational Technology from Central Michigan University. I have taught at Denver Christian, Calvin Christian, and have had the blessing to do two summer workshops in China.

One of my favorite bible verses is Galatians 5:1 It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.  Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.

Matt Jewett

English

Before coming to Calvin Christian, I taught English for ten years at Kalamazoo Christian High School where I commuted from Wyoming.  Before that, I worked as an adjunct instructor at Boston College, Calvin College, and Grand Rapids Community College.  During this time, I also worked as a part time adult ed teacher at the Van Buren County jail.

I have my Master’s in English from Boston College and my Bachelor’s degree with a double major in English and Communication Arts from Cornerstone University.

I am married to Sara Jewett and have two high energy but wonderful children: Blake and Adele.  Sara is the diaconal coordinator at Calvary Christian Reformed Church where she focuses on benevolence, community relationships, and outreach.  I am the discipleship elder and a youth group leader at Calvary CRC.  Netflix tells me that I love “mind bending science fiction”, “period pieces featuring a strong female lead,” and “fight the system movies.”  I also love binge reading, playing chess with my son, interpretive dancing with my daughter, directing theatre, and eating pizza rolls.

As teacher I want my student to “own” their thoughts.  I don’t want their thoughts to exist in a bubble but to have them participate in discourse communities that go beyond the walls of the classroom.  I want to prepare them with the right questions to ask their culture and their communities.  And, most importantly, I want them to “own” their faith walk and to help disciple them into a deeper relationship with God.  A verse that I’m still trying to live out is Philippians 4:12: “I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation.”

I am grateful for and excited about the opportunity to serve as the Dean of Student Life at Calvin Christian High School.  Before joining CCHS in this role, I served as a pastor at Mars Hill in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where I worked on the kids, students, and adult ministry teams for over a decade.  I am a graduate of Kuyper College and Grand Rapids Theological Seminary, and have lived and studied in the Middle East.  I am a Certified Trainer for the Fuller Youth Institute at Fuller Theological Seminary and have served on the Editorial Board for the Institute for Youth Ministry at Princeton Theological Seminary.  I’m also a sports-enthusiast, joke-teller, and food-snob.
My wife, Stephanie, and I have two young children and we live in Jenison, Michigan.  We love offering hospitality, eating good food, being at the beach as much as possible, spontaneous adventures, and exploring nature.

Choir, Orchestra, Boys' Varsity Soccer Head Coach

I thoroughly enjoy the diversity in my work, sharing my passion for my Lord, music and competition, and the opportunities to build relationships with the families at Grandville Calvin Christian Schools.  I am blessed and thankful to have taught here since 2006. In addition to teaching high school choir and orchestra, I also teach middle school choir and orchestra and elementary school orchestra and coach the boys Varsity  and girls JV soccer team.

I am a graduate of Hudsonville and Unity Christian School, and a graduate of Calvin College with a degree in Vocal Music Education.  I am currently a member at LaGrave Ave CRC.

When not teaching, I enjoy my time outdoors golfing, fishing, camping, or sometimes just walking while gazing at God’s incredible creation.  My favorite passage is Psalm 100:  “Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth.  Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful sounds.  Know that the Lord is God.  It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.  Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name.  For the Lord is good, and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.”

Emily Nelson

Counselor

God has led me to Calvin Christian Middle School and High School as the Support and Transition Counselor.  I will be responsible for grades 6-10. God has given me the heart for adolescents who are struggling emotionally and academically. One area of counseling that I strongly believe is important is to teach adolescents how to cope with stress and anxiety in a healthy manner. I look forward to supporting students by referencing scripture and encouraging students to spend time with the Lord.

In 2013, I graduated from Hope College with my Bachelor’s in Psychology. I received my Master’s of Education in School Counseling from Grand Valley State University.

When I am not at school, I love spending time with my husband, Austin, and my two dogs, Lake and Tahoe.  In addition, I love being with friends and family, fixing and decorating our 1927 house, reading, gardening, yoga, being by Lake Michigan, and enjoying some gluten free pizza. In the summer, I volunteer at the Equest Therapeutic Riding Center where I am able to enjoy my love for working with kids with disabilities and my love for horses.

My favorite verses:

“Be Still and, know that I am God”-Psalm 46:10

“I am the vine, you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing” John 15:5

Pete Overvoorde

PE, Boys' & Girls' Varsity Bowling Coach

In 2006 I joined the CCHS staff and since then have had the privilege of talking to young students about the importance of physical health and wellness and how those things can directly and indirectly influence a person’s ability to serve the Lord. Not only do I do this through teaching, but I try to model this by living a lifestyle reflective of the physical gifts and abilities God has blessed me with. Prior to teaching at Calvin Christian, I taught both elementary and middle school health and physical education in other schools. I also was able to interact with diverse groups of kids while serving as Coordinator for Pre-College Programs at Calvin College. In addition to teaching, I currently serve as the boys and girls bowling coach, and have also held the post of the head boys track and field coach for a number of years.
I am a father of three amazing young children, who also share a love of fun and physical activity. Mountain biking and road biking are two of my favorite hobbies. To me, there is nothing like getting a great workout in while enjoying the wonderful landscape God has painted for us all to enjoy. Other than that, I love to live vicariously through my children by cheering for them at soccer, volleyball, and basketball games. A favorite saying of mine is, “Things turn out best for the people who make the best of the way things turn out”.

Pat Rubingh

Administrative Assistant

My life has been blessed by being part of the Calvin Christian School community since October of 2003.  My post-high school education was one semester at Davenport College and then I felt led to look for an actual secretarial job rather than continue with school.  My secretarial career has been uniquely all in school-related positions at Reformed Bible Institute/College (now Kuyper College), Ferris State College, Calvin College, and Creston Christian Elementary/Middle School.  The circle of working in each grade/age related field of education has now been completed since coming to Calvin Christian High School.

I enjoy interacting with people and my position at CCHS allows me to meet, greet, and assist people who come through the doors of our office.  My goal is to see each person I meet as a person uniquely created by God and to convey God’s love to them in the way that I assist them, no matter what that task may be.  A favorite little quote/prayer I strive to live by is “Lord, make my life a window for your light to shine through and a mirror to reflect your love to every person I meet.”

I’ve been married for 43 years on September 9, 2015 to my best friend.  Jerry & I have a married daughter, Rachel, and they have blessed us with our one grandchild, Leah, who is almost 6 years old.  Our son, James, lives and works in Tokyo, Japan.  We are actively involved in our church family at Blythefield CRC in Rockford where I am the Congregational Life Coordinator.  This involves creating, planning, and presenting opportunities and activities for our members to participate in which build relationships and help demonstrate encouragement and support to each other.  Favorite pastimes include playing the piano, reading, and hanging out with my granddaughter.

My “life verse” can be found in Psalm 34:13-14a: But I will say, “You are my God; I will trust in You.  My times are in Your hands.”  God has my life’s journey all in His care and keeping.  Wow!  That’s pretty awesome to know.

Kathy Schaner

Educational Support Assistant

I have been blessed with the opportunity to work with a special group of kids, in both middle school and high school, helping them find their God given potential with their unique learning style, or reminding them how all of us are loved by a wonderous, loving God.  I couldn’t love working with these kids more!  I have a Bachelor of Science from Western Mich University, with a major in communications and a minor in social psychology.  It was through God’s path for me that I found this awesome calling in my life.  I worked previously with special needs children for eight years, before taking time off to have my youngest child, six years ago.

I am a busy mother of four beautiful girls and enjoy working as an independent consultant with Thirty-One Gifts.  Since I grew up along the shores of Lake Michigan, I have a love for lighthouses.  One of my favorite verses reminds me of the light that guides those on the water to safety…John 8:12.  “Then Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world.  He who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of Life.”

Spanish

My love for languages and cultures began back when I was a student in high school and continued as I studied at Calvin College, where I majored in Spanish K-12 secondary education and minored in bilingual education.  I had the opportunity to travel and live in both Spain and Mexico while in college, and enjoy incorporating what I learned from those cultures into my teaching.  I received my Masters of Education from Grand Valley State University in 2010.  My favorite part of teaching is helping students learn to appreciate and have a love for all of God’s people.  I am also co-leading the International Club

My husband, Rob, and I live in Wyoming with our two children.  Besides Spanish and cultures, some of my hobbies include reading, cooking, photography and traveling (in fact, I traveled with Calvin Christian students to Spain in 2006, 2009 and 2012).  Our family attends South Harbor church in Byron Center.
One of my favorite passages from the Bible is Psalm 19:14; “May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Oh Lord, my rock and my redeemer.”

Ben Tameling

Old Testmant Survey, Reformed Doctrine, U.S. History

It is an incredible blessing to be able to study the Bible together and ask big questions about what it means to follow Jesus and live in his Kingdom in today’s society. I hope my students leave my classes with a deeper love for Christ and a desire to take part in his “new creation” work as his Body. I began my career at Calvin Christian in 2009,  right out Calvin College, where I graduated with Religion and History majors. I am now currently pursuing a M.A. in Bible & Theology at Calvin Theological Seminary.

My wife, Abbie, is the After-School Care Director at Grandville Christian School. We have been married for five years and have two children who we love spending time with.

Hobbies and interests of mine include the Bible (!), reading, music, sports, and announcing CCHS football and basketball games.

A favorite passage of mine is Isaiah 52:7-10, specifically verse 7, which reads “How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of the messenger who announces peace, who brings good news, who announces salvation, who says to Zion, ‘Your God reigns.’”

Becky Teusink

Chemistry and Physical Science, International Students Coordinator

I grew up in New Jersey where I attended Eastern Christian School.  I graduated from Calvin College in 1999 with a Biology Major, Chemistry Minor and a secondary education teaching certificate.  After Calvin I attended graduate school from 1999-2001 at Purdue University’s School of Agriculture where I completed a Masters in Biochemical Genetics.  I started teaching at Calvin Christian in 2015 after teaching at Purdue, Twin Lakes HS (Monticello, IN), West Ottawa HS and Holland Christian HS.

My husband Mike and I were married in 1999.  We moved to Holland in 2003 to raise our children on his family’s farm.  We have 3 children, Henry, Anna and Luke who attend Zeeland Christian School.  We love spending time outside, especially any activity near or in a lake.  We are members of Providence Church where I have been active in Women’s ministry, teaching Sunday School and Small Groups.

I love learning new things about Science and hope that excitement comes through in my classroom.  As I learn more I am continually amazed by the detailed way God has created us and the world around us.  In my classroom I strive to not only teach students Science but also how to take that knowledge and link it to our Biblical calling to be stewards of creation and our school mission of Loving, Learning and Serving.

John Timmer

Algebra, Statistics, Dean of Academic Operations

I have the unique story that I have been a teacher at Calvin Christian two different times.  I began my teaching career here at Calvin and remained on staff for six years.  I then had a nine year stay at Holland Christian.  In 2010 I felt a strong calling by God to return to CCHS.  I have been teaching mathematics and serving as the registrar since my return to CCHS.  It is wonderful to have a career where I am confident God wants me to be and where I can use the gifts He has given me to serve others.  I am excited to be here to prepare students to see the gifts God has given them, develop their gifts, and begin to see where God is calling them to use their gifts in the future.

I earned my bachelor’s degree from Calvin College and my master’s degree from Grand Valley State University.  Currently at Calvin Christian I teach mathematics at the high school and serve as registrar for grades six through twelve.  I have also had roles as both the girls and boys varsity swim coach, head of chapel committee, and student council advisor.

My wife Becci and I were married in 1999.  We have three children.  I enjoy watching and participating in many different sports – especially soccer and swimming.  I am often involved in various activities at our church.  In addition, I spend some time as an adjunct instructor at Davenport University.

A verse that gives direction to my life is Colossians 3:17, “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”  It is great reminder that every moment of our lives is to bring glory to God and to praise Him for his amazing blessings to us.

Corry Vander Sluis

Spanish

Teaching at Calvin Christian is what God has prepared me for and where God wants me right now. I grew up in a home where Dutch was spoken by my parents.  They thought that no one could understand their secrets. Little did they know that one of their kids had a knack for picking up languages. That background helped me learn Spanish and love it. I studied in Spain even before Calvin College had their international study abroad program. I have also studied in Mexico for several summers. I received my master’s degree in from The School for International Training in Brattleboro, Vermont. All of these experiences helped me to learn to speak and teach Spanish.

I have taught Spanish at every level possible, from high school, to homeschool, to college classes and then to preschool Spanish immersion. I am thankful to be back in the high school and work at Calvin Christian where we can laugh and learn from each other.

I am married to David Vander Sluis and we live in Holland. Dave is an electrician  We have three children, Sam, Becky and Mary.  We love family time together and hiking, walking along Lake Michigan and biking.

Algebra, Personal Finance and Statistics

Calvin Christian has been a great place to work since I joined the staff in 2007.  It is a joy to come to work each day and teach students that strive to understand God’s hand in the world around them and in their own lives.  I enjoy seeing students develop academically, spiritually, and emotionally over their high school careers as they become more confident, independent thinkers.

I earned my Bachelor’s degree at Calvin College and my Master’s degree through Cornerstone University.  I am married to my husband, Nick, who has taught me to be a Maple Leafs fan.  In my spare time, I enjoy reading, walking my dog, playing cards, and hanging out with family and friends.  I attend Ada Bible Church, where I have been going for the last 15 years.  In all I do, I strive to live out Micah 6:8, “And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”

In 2012, I was called to teach at Calvin Christian High School. I have also been helping with the Student Leadership Committee and organizing CloseUp trips to Washington, D.C. In addition to teaching here, I also appreciate this community that has accepted and involved my family as we transplanted here and as all three of my children now attend, or graduated from, Grandville Calvin Christian Schools.

My favorite verses are Matthew 28:19-20 (the Great Commission) and Micah 6:8. These verses concisely convict us to call others and ourselves to Biblical redemption and justice.
