Mary Bouma

Kindergarten

I have been a part of the GCCS community for many years. After graduating from Calvin College, I began my teaching career at Calvin Christian Elementary teaching 3rd grade, 2nd grade, and 1st grade. Then I was able to stay at home for a number of years when my children were young. I began working as Support Staff at GCS, and now I am blessed to be teaching Kindergarten here. My husband, Tom, is the Athletic Director at CCHS. We have four children and one son-in-law, who have all attended Grandville Christian and Calvin Christian. I enjoy reading, walking, shopping, and watching high school sports. My favorite verse is I Thessalonians 5:16-18. Be joyful always, pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus

Third grade

I’ve been blessed to be part of the GCS community for many years, both as a teacher and as a parent. While at Calvin College, I student taught at GCS and was then offered a job teaching 2nd grade, and as they say, “the rest is history!” It’s been a joy teaching children in grades 1-4 about God and His world.

My husband, Jim, and I have 2 adult children, a daughter-in-law, and 3 precious grandchildren!

I enjoy reading, making homemade cards, playing handbells, and spending time with the family in my free time.

My favorite Bible verse is Jeremiah 29:11. “For I know that plans I have for you,” declares the Lord. “Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Katlyn Cabrera

Kindergarten

In 2009 when the Spanish Immersion program began, I was blessed with the opportunity to join the GCS staff. I had just finished my degree in History and Elementary education at Calvin College and was about to begin my Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in multi-cultural education. It is a great joy and privilege to teach all these little ones about God, the world around us, and the Spanish Language. I love using music, movement, and creativity in my teaching whenever possible.
My husband, Edgar and I enjoy adventures, traveling, spending time with family, and going to movies together.
My theme song as a teacher has always been: “Make me a Servant” because I believe that Christian teacher we are called to serve our students and those around us.
“Make me a servant humble and meek. Lord let me lift up those who are weak. And may the prayer of my heart always be. Make me a servant make me a servant. Make me a servant today.”

Preschool

After graduating from Calvin College, I taught sixth grade at Northern Michigan Christian School in McBain, before moving back to west Michigan to work in Educational Support at Hudsonville Christian School. I was blessed to be able to stay at home with my children when they were young. I have enjoyed the privilege of teaching the young children in Polka Dot Garden Preschool, partnering with other skilled teachers in the three-year-old and four-year-old English programs. My husband, Dan, and I have two sons who attended Grandville Christian School and are now thriving at Calvin Christian Middle and High School. In my free time I enjoy gardening and baking, as well as walking and biking with my family. I treasure the words of Psalm 91:4—“He will cover you with His feathers and under His wings you will find refuge.”

Ruth Doorn

Education Support Specialist

My journey in the field of education spans preschool to college-aged students. I started out teaching 1st and 3rd grade at West Side Christian School, and then landed at Calvin College for a few years, where I supervised seniors in the Elementary Education program during their student teaching experience, and co-taught an entry-level education course. When my children were very young, I partnered with two other moms to create the Polka Dot Garden for preschool-aged children. I’ve been working with the Educational Support Services staff at Grandville Christian School since 2005. I earned a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education with an endorsement for Special Education from Calvin College, and recently earned a Master’s degree in Special Education at GVSU. My husband and I enjoy time with our three children, and traveling to visit family. Throughout my life with my family and in my work as a teacher, God continues to remind me that He “…is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us.” Ephesians 3:20

Cherie Dykstra

Childcare

After serving 31 years as a special education teacher within the Grand Rapids Public Schools, I choose to retire from full time teaching. After much prayer, I felt a calling to be a smaller part of the Christian School community. So, I began working at Grandville Christian in the fall of 2010.
It has been 6 wonderful and most blessed years working within Childcare and the Young Five’s classroom.
My husband and I are both products and supporters of Christian education. We have two wonderful adult children who along with their spouses have blessed us with four beautiful grandchildren.
Being part of the GCCS staff has given me a new respect for Christian education. It is a privilege to love God’s “littlest” while sharing my love and commitment for Christ with them.
Micah 6:8 sums up the goal within my life: “And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly, love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”

First grade

I am saved by grace and blessed to share God’s love and salvation plan with students as they grow deep roots and strong wings.  My favorite verse is Psalm 121:

1 I lift my eyes to the hills – where does my help come from?

2 My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.

3 He will not let your foot slip – he who watches over you will not slumber

I graduated from GVSU in 2004 and studied Spanish and French there.  Previously I was a long-term sub at Hudsonville, but have recently stayed home with my three children.  My hobbies include horses, skiing, traveling and languages.

First grade

I am so blessed to be part of the GCCS staff!  I graduated from Calvin College in 2012 with a Bachelor of the Arts in Education with endorsements in Spanish and mathematics.  At Calvin, I was given the wonderful opportunity to live and study abroad in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.  I have also visited Guatemala and Nicaragua.  In addition, I work with adults in Grand Rapids from Latin American countries, helping them learn English.

Teaching the children here at GCS is huge blessing.  It is such a privilege to see the love flowing in this building every day: love for God and love for each other.  I am excited to see children grow in their faith while learning about the world around them during their time here.  It is my prayer that my actions demonstrate God’s love daily to my students as they grow and learn.

When I am not teaching, I love to read.  I also play piano in my church and love worshiping God through music.  Lastly, I treasure the time I am able to spend with friends and family.

My favorite Bible verse: Philippians 4:13  “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

Cindy Fopma

Preschool

After graduating from Dordt College, I started out my teaching career at Pella Christian Grade school in Iowa. I was athletic director, gym teacher and coach for two years until we moved to Michigan for my husband to attend seminary. I was head teacher of 4’s preschool at Orchard Hill Reformed church for two years and began substitute teaching when we were on our internship in Highland, Indiana. The next 12 years I substitute taught off and on as we served two churches in northwest Iowa and started our family. Seven years ago we moved to Michigan and I spent part of those years substitute teaching and working after school childcare here at GCCS. Last year I was given the opportunity to teach preschool again and currently I am teaching 3’s English preschool. Most of my spare time is spent with family. My husband Dale is pastor of Hope CRC and we have two daughters. I enjoy baking, decorating, and anything that gives me a chance to be outside. I consider it a privilege to be able to teach at GCCS and a blessing to be able to do what I love to do. One of my favorite Bible verses is Romans 15:13 – “Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”

Band Director

I joined the GCCS staff in 2013.  Because my music teaching duties split my time between the three campuses, I am privileged to teach and learn about students on many different parts of their journey.  I graduated Calvin College for K-12 music education.  In addition to my music teaching, I am a worship leader at Calvary CRC and the conductor of Jubal Brass.

My wife, Joanna, and I live in Kentwood with our daughter, one dog and three cats. I am passionate about: gun safety, the second amendment, personal finance and creating a family legacy, Harry Potter, and Super Mario Smash Bros.

Educational Support

I was hired at Grandville Christian School in 1980 after graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Calvin College. My husband, Ken and I have three adult children who live with us in Byron Center. Currently I am the contact person for our Kenya Connection.  I am also working in the kindergarten, first and second grade classrooms assisting during math and reading.  My greatest joy is to teach children to talk with God. Helping children know God personally and presenting them with varied opportunities to talk with Him is what God has called me to do. At Grandville Christian I not only teach children who God is and about His world, but also how to approach His throne.  Children meet with me for times of prayer, devotions and spiritual discipleship.

My family has a long history with the GCS. I attended Grandville Christian as a child, and my three sons Torey, Alden, and Jeremy all attended here as well. During that time, I also served on the school board.

My husband Ron and I have been married for over 30 years. We enjoy gardening, walking, bike riding, reading, travelling, and skiing. Preschool Director

I have a wonderful career in the educational field and am blessed to be the Director of Polka Dot Garden Preschool here at the elementary campus.  After graduating with a BA from Calvin College, I taught at Alger Park Preschool, then went on to teach Kindergarten at Moline Christian School and later was a preschool teacher and the director of an afterschool program in Hudsonville while my boys were young.  Polka Dot Garden started out as a playgroup and became a preschool before it became a part of Grandville Christian School.  Since then it has also incorporated both English & Spanish Immersion options for parents of preschoolers.  I love early childhood education and I enjoy teaching as well as fulfilling my director role.  One of my greatest joys each day is being able to share the love of Jesus with preschoolers and teaching them how precious they are to God!  My desire is to help each child grow in their faith as they explore the wonders of God and his creation.

My husband Michael and I have three sons.  Two have graduated from Grandville Calvin Christian School and are in college and the youngest is in middle school.  My husband teaches Chemistry and is the Assistant Principal at Calvin Christian High School.  In my free time I love gardening, baking, traveling & reading.

Educational Support Specialist

Having taught at four Christian schools prior to coming to GCS, I believe I have landed at one of the best! My work as a certified Reading Recovery teacher and Educational Support Specialist is challenging, gratifying, and rewarding. I work with amazing children and their families at a school that values early intervention and believes that all students can learn. It’s truly a joy and a blessing to be a part of this great community.

When I’m not at school, I enjoy reading and traveling ( which always includes several trips a year to my homeland of British Columbia ) and spending time with my husband, son and daughter-in-law, and our delightful granddaughter.

My alma mater is Calvin College, where I earned my undergraduate degree in English and Elementary Education; later, while teaching in the Los Angeles area, I earned a master’s degree in reading from California State University, Long Beach. After returning to Michigan, I obtained an endorsement in Learning Disabilities from Calvin College.

Choir, Orchestra, Boys' Varsity Soccer Head Coach

I thoroughly enjoy the diversity in my work, sharing my passion for my Lord, music and competition, and the opportunities to build relationships with the families at Grandville Calvin Christian Schools.  I am blessed and thankful to have taught here since 2006. In addition to teaching high school choir and orchestra, I also teach middle school choir and orchestra and elementary school orchestra and coach the boys Varsity  and girls JV soccer team.

I am a graduate of Hudsonville and Unity Christian School, and a graduate of Calvin College with a degree in Vocal Music Education.  I am currently a member at LaGrave Ave CRC.

When not teaching, I enjoy my time outdoors golfing, fishing, camping, or sometimes just walking while gazing at God’s incredible creation.  My favorite passage is Psalm 100:  “Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth.  Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful sounds.  Know that the Lord is God.  It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.  Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name.  For the Lord is good, and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.”

Third grade

After receiving a BA in Spanish, I had the privilege to live in Spain for over 15 years in which I pursued a BA in Education and a Masters in Neuropsychology as well as worked teaching children of all ages.  More importantly, however, we started our amazing family including 4 children who attend GCCS.  We moved from Spain to the States in 2013,  in which I began a Masters in Linguistics at WMU. I started off at GCS teaching 5th grade, and this year I am discovering 3rd grade!  I am blessed to be able to share God´s gift of language with my students and to support them in discovering their own gifts and talents to further His kingdom.

In our free time, our family enjoys traveling and discovering more about God´s great creation, hiking, and just about anything outdoors.

A favorite verse of mine is Phillipians 4:6-7:

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

I have spent the past four years teaching at Hope Academy of West Michigan, a pre-school-12th grade charter school near Garfield Park in Grand Rapids.  Though I will greatly miss the students and friends I made at Hope Academy, I look forward to being a part of the Grandville-Calvin Christian School family.  I am teaching Spanish to grades 1-5 and World Cultures to the immersion classes at Grandville Christian Elementary.  On Monday and Thursday I teach Spanish at Calvin Christian Middle School to all grades.

My wife, Kristin, teaches in an Early Childhood Special Education classroom at Ottawa Area Center.  We have two beautiful daughters.  Eva attends Grandville Christian in Preschool Spanish Immersion, and Leonora is 4 months old.

I am a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian, and a graduate of Calvin College with a degree in Secondary Spanish and English Ed.  I received my k-12 endorsement for Spanish from Aquinas.  I am currently a member at Madison Square CRC.  In my free time, I enjoy playing music, building things, hiking, camping, playing or watching sports, and many other things.  I have too many hobbies to keep up with.

Fourth grade

I am very excited to be joining the GCS community this year in 4th grade Spanish immersion. After graduating from Cornerstone University in 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in Language Arts and TESOL, I spent my first four years teaching at Chandler Woods Charter Academy in Belmont as a fourth grade teacher.

I developed a passion for learning Spanish during my college years and stopped at nothing to place myself in immersion experiences: living in Mexico for a summer, studying in Costa Rica, traveling to Guatemala, and most recently, returning to Mexico from 2012-2015 to teach preK-6th graders in a children’s shelter outside Guadalajara.

When not teaching, I LOVE to read, play the piano or guitar, mountain bike, be outside, play beach volleyball, write, and spend time with friends and family (especially my niece and nephews J)! I am also currently finishing up my master’s degree in Instruction and Curriculum with an emphasis in Educational Differentiation through GVSU.

One of my favorite verses is Isaiah 26:3-4: You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in you. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord, the Lord, is the Rock eternal.

Preschool

I began teaching in the late 1980’s as a high school German, Business and Math teacher. After marrying my husband, Craig, I worked for several years as an HR professional at a German automotive supplier. Staying home to raise our four boys, I eventually returned to teaching in 2009 as a GCS substitute teacher, and a Polka Dot Garden teacher. I now work exclusively in the GCS Childcare Center. I love my work and the people (kids and grown-ups) whom I work with. I see my job as a calling and mission to love the littlest of God’s children and make their non-school time at GCS safe, worthwhile and fun. In my spare time, I like to cook, can, hike, go to the beach and clean closets. My life verse is short and sweet: Psalm 34:1a “I will praise God no matter what happens.” TLB

First grade

I am blessed to be a part of the GCCS staff!  I began teaching here in 1999 as a half-day kindergarten teacher.  I moved to first grade 5 years ago.  Before teaching at Grandville Christian School, I taught first grade for three years in Whitinsville, MA, I taught for two years at Zeeland Christian and then taught fourth grade for three years in California.  I took a few years off to be with my children before coming to teach at GCCS.

I attended Calvin College where I earned both my bachelors degree and my masters degree in the teaching of reading.
My husband, Russ, is an engineer at GE Aviation.  We have three children, a son who is also an engineer, a daughter at Hope College and a son who attends Calvin Christian High School.  As a family we love soccer, camping and hiking.
My favorite verse is one that I pray for my children and my students:  Jeremiah 29:11.  For I know the plans I have for you says the Lord.  Plans to prosper you and not to harm you.  Plans to give you a hope and a future.

First grade

I have had the privilege of teaching 1st grade in Grandville Christian’s Spanish immersion program since 2010.  Prior to that, I studied Spanish and Bilingual Education at Calvin College and had the opportunity to study abroad in Honduras.  I am currently pursuing my Master’s degree in Educational Leadership at Calvin College.
In April of 2016, my husband, Brian, and I had our first child, and so I am now stepping into the role of Spanish Immersion Coordinator.  I am excited to continue to be a part of the Spanish immersion program working with parents, students, and teachers.
One of my favorite Bible verses is Philippians 4:6-7 as it reminds me to put my life in God’s hands and trust His plans for me: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Educational Support Specialist

I am a member of the Educational Support Services team. As a licensed Social Worker, I promote social skills and friendship among the students at Grandville Christian School. I also have the privilege of working with teachers to support students facing social emotional challenges that may affect relationships and availability for learning. After earning a BSW from Dordt College, I worked at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital as a pediatric medical social worker. One of my biggest adventures was living in Nigeria for 9 months. In 2002 I co-founded Polka Dot Garden Preschool, where I had the joy of teaching for 12 years. Recently, I received training in Social Thinking curriculum.

My husband David and I have three children. Traveling, hiking, camping, cooking and time with family and friends are a few of my favorite blessings!

Zephaniah 3:17 The Lord your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing.”

Second grade

I am so blessed to be part of the GCS staff. I am from Cuba where I studied at the Felix Varela University. I have now been living in the U.S. for 7 years and am grateful for all God has done for me. At GCS I had the privilege to teach Spanish Immersion preschool for two years and have now been teaching second grade for six years. I love seeing the second graders learn about God and his world. I have a daughter who is 22 years old and is attending Davenport University. I like to read and write in my free time. My favorite Bible verse is Leviticus 19:33-35. When an alien lives with you in your land, do not mistreat him. The alien living with you must be treated as one of your native-born. Love him as yourself, for you were aliens in Egypt. I am the LORD your GOD.

Second grade

I became part of the GCS staff in 1996 after graduating from Calvin College and have been blessed to teach both third grade and second grade.  I also have a Master’s degree in Gifted and Talented Education from GVSU.  I am a native of the Grand Haven/Muskegon area, attend Ridgewood CRC in Jenison, and also have two daughters who are students at GCCS.

Over the years Jeremiah 29:11-13 has been an especially meaningful Bible passage for me in my life and teaching.

Jeremiah 29:11-13 “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me, and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”

As God has called me into each season of life he has shown me how solid and steadfast the truths in this passage really are.  I strive each day to help my students learn how to seek God with all their hearts.
