I have been a part of the GCCS community for many years. After graduating from Calvin College, I began my teaching career at Calvin Christian Elementary teaching 3rd grade, 2nd grade, and 1st grade. Then I was able to stay at home for a number of years when my children were young. I began working as Support Staff at GCS, and now I am blessed to be teaching Kindergarten here. My husband, Tom, is the Athletic Director at CCHS. We have four children and one son-in-law, who have all attended Grandville Christian and Calvin Christian. I enjoy reading, walking, shopping, and watching high school sports. My favorite verse is I Thessalonians 5:16-18. Be joyful always, pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus

Carole Brinks

I’ve been blessed to be part of the GCS community for many years, both as a teacher and as a parent. While at Calvin College, I student taught at GCS and was then offered a job teaching 2nd grade, and as they say, “the rest is history!” It’s been a joy teaching children in grades 1-4 about God and His world.

My husband, Jim, and I have 2 adult children, a daughter-in-law, and 3 precious grandchildren!

I enjoy reading, making homemade cards, playing handbells, and spending time with the family in my free time.

My favorite Bible verse is Jeremiah 29:11. “For I know that plans I have for you,” declares the Lord. “Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Katlyn Cabrera

In 2009 when the Spanish Immersion program began, I was blessed with the opportunity to join the GCS staff. I had just finished my degree in History and Elementary education at Calvin College and was about to begin my Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in multi-cultural education. It is a great joy and privilege to teach all these little ones about God, the world around us, and the Spanish Language. I love using music, movement, and creativity in my teaching whenever possible.
My husband, Edgar and I enjoy adventures, traveling, spending time with family, and going to movies together.
My theme song as a teacher has always been: “Make me a Servant” because I believe that Christian teacher we are called to serve our students and those around us.

DeeAnn Chaffee

After graduating from Calvin College, I taught sixth grade at Northern Michigan Christian School in McBain, before moving back to west Michigan to work in Educational Support at Hudsonville Christian School. I was blessed to be able to stay at home with my children when they were young. I have enjoyed the privilege of teaching the young children in Polka Dot Garden Preschool, partnering with other skilled teachers in the three-year-old and four-year-old English programs. My husband, Dan, and I have two sons who attended Grandville Christian School and are now thriving at Calvin Christian Middle and High School. In my free time I enjoy gardening and baking, as well as walking and biking with my family. I treasure the words of Psalm 91:4—“He will cover you with His feathers and under His wings you will find refuge.”

Fifth grade

I completed my bachelor’s at Calvin College after which I worked and taught at a girls’ shelter in Merida, Mexico for a year and a half.  Upon returning, I began substitute teaching and directing an after-school LOOP program while also developing an adult ESL program at our church with my soon-to-be-husband, the pastor of our Hispanic ministry.  After that, I spent the next five years working at Southwest Community Campus teaching middle school science and social studies while also working towards my masters in bilingual education at Aquinas College.  My husband and I have two boys and love spending time together as a family.  In my free time I enjoy competing in races, painting, reading, traveling, doing anything musical and staying involved in our church.

Judy De Bruin

After graduating from Calvin College, I began my teaching career as a substitute teacher in many west Michigan schools at the elementary and middle school level. At the same time, I also worked for Coopersville Public School through the adult ESL program. I then followed my husband to Boca Raton, Florida, where he attended graduate school and I taught 2nd and 3rd grade at Spanish River Christian School. Upon returning to west Michigan, I started teaching preschool at Our Savior Lutheran School in Grand Rapids. In 2006 I was blessed with the opportunity to join the Polka Dot Garden teaching staff at Grandville Christian School. I enjoy the privilege of spending time with the youngest GCCS students, for whom each day is an adventure with exciting new things to learn and discover about God’s world and His deep love for us.

My husband Darryl and I have four children, two who currently attend GCCS. In my free time I enjoy family and friends, the outdoors, walking, biking, and boating.

After doing my student teaching at Grandville Christian, I taught second grade for five years and now teach general music for the elementary grades.  I graduated from Calvin College with a degree in music and elementary education.  I enjoy playing and singing with the children.  I love watching the joy on the children’s faces when we share music together. I am married to Dean and we have two married children and four grandchildren.  I enjoy spending time with my family, reading, and traveling. My favorite verse is I Timothy 4: Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith, and in purity.

Ruth Doorn

My journey in the field of education spans preschool to college-aged students. I started out teaching 1st and 3rd grade at West Side Christian School, and then landed at Calvin College for a few years, where I supervised seniors in the Elementary Education program during their student teaching experience, and co-taught an entry-level education course. When my children were very young, I partnered with two other moms to create the Polka Dot Garden for preschool-aged children. I’ve been working with the Educational Support Services staff at Grandville Christian School since 2005. I earned a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education with an endorsement for Special Education from Calvin College, and recently earned a Master’s degree in Special Education at GVSU. My husband and I enjoy time with our three children, and traveling to visit family. Throughout my life with my family and in my work as a teacher, God continues to remind me that He “…is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us.” Ephesians 3:20

Cherie Dykstra

After serving 31 years as a special education teacher within the Grand Rapids Public Schools, I choose to retire from full time teaching. After much prayer, I felt a calling to be a smaller part of the Christian School community. So, I began working at Grandville Christian in the fall of 2010.
It has been 6 wonderful and most blessed years working within Childcare and the Young Five’s classroom.
My husband and I are both products and supporters of Christian education. We have two wonderful adult children who along with their spouses have blessed us with four beautiful grandchildren.
Being part of the GCCS staff has given me a new respect for Christian education. It is a privilege to love God’s “littlest” while sharing my love and commitment for Christ with them.
Micah 6:8 sums up the goal within my life: “And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly, love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”

I graduated from GVSU in 2004 and studied Spanish and French there.  Previously I was a long-term sub at Hudsonville, but have recently stayed home with my three children.  My hobbies include horses, skiing, traveling and languages.

Sarah Fennema

First grade

I am so blessed to be part of the GCCS staff!  I graduated from Calvin College in 2012 with a Bachelor of the Arts in Education with endorsements in Spanish and mathematics.  At Calvin, I was given the wonderful opportunity to live and study abroad in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.  I have also visited Guatemala and Nicaragua.  In addition, I work with adults in Grand Rapids from Latin American countries, helping them learn English.  

 
Teaching the children here at GCS is huge blessing.  It is such a privilege to see the love flowing in this building every day: love for God and love for each other.  I am excited to see children grow in their faith while learning about the world around them during their time here.  It is my prayer that my actions demonstrate God’s love daily to my students as they grow and learn.

When I am not teaching, I love to read.  I also play piano in my church and love worshiping God through music.  Lastly, I treasure the time I am able to spend with friends and family.

My favorite Bible verse: Philippians 4:13  “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

After graduating from Dordt College, I started out my teaching career at Pella Christian Grade school in Iowa. I was athletic director, gym teacher and coach for two years until we moved to Michigan for my husband to attend seminary. I was head teacher of 4’s preschool at Orchard Hill Reformed church for two years and began substitute teaching when we were on our internship in Highland, Indiana. The next 12 years I substitute taught off and on as we served two churches in northwest Iowa and started our family. Seven years ago we moved to Michigan and I spent part of those years substitute teaching and working after school childcare here at GCCS. Last year I was given the opportunity to teach preschool again and currently I am teaching 3’s English preschool. Most of my spare time is spent with family. My husband Dale is pastor of Hope CRC and we have two daughters. I enjoy baking, decorating, and anything that gives me a chance to be outside. I consider it a privilege to be able to teach at GCCS and a blessing to be able to do what I love to do. One of my favorite Bible verses is Romans 15:13 – “Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”

I joined the GCCS staff in 2013.  Because my music teaching duties split my time between the three campuses, I am privileged to teach and learn about students on many different parts of their journey.  I graduated Calvin College for K-12 music education.  In addition to my music teaching, I am a worship leader at Calvary CRC and the conductor of Jubal Brass.

My wife, Joanna, and I live in Kentwood with our daughter, one dog and three cats. I am passionate about: gun safety, the second amendment, personal finance and creating a family legacy, Harry Potter, and Super Mario Smash Bros.

I was hired at Grandville Christian School in 1980 after graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Calvin College. My husband, Ken and I have three adult children who live with us in Byron Center. Currently I am the contact person for our Kenya Connection.  I am also working in the kindergarten, first and second grade classrooms assisting during math and reading.  My greatest joy is to teach children to talk with God. Helping children know God personally and presenting them with varied opportunities to talk with Him is what God has called me to do. At Grandville Christian I not only teach children who God is and about His world, but also how to approach His throne.  Children meet with me for times of prayer, devotions and spiritual discipleship.

I began working at Grandville Christian School in 2014, starting out in childcare then moving to the office as an administrative assistant.

My family has a long history with the GCS. I attended Grandville Christian as a child, and my three sons Torey, Alden, and Jeremy all attended here as well. During that time, I also served on the school board.

My husband Ron and I have been married for over 30 years. We enjoy gardening, walking, bike riding, reading, travelling, and skiing. After graduating from Calvin College with a BA in Elementary  Education, I began teaching in third grade and later taught first and second grade. I have been blessed to provide Educational Support Services to students at GCS for 17 years. I am passionate about helping each child reach his/her potential and about helping each child to succeed.

My husband and I have two married daughters and a 15 year old son in heaven. We also have five wonderful grandchildren.
Each summer I tutor at GCS and  raise and release monarch butterflies. I tag them before they begin their migration to Mexico. God’s creation is amazing and I enjoy sharing it with my students. I am an avid animal lover and I love, love, love to read. I work hard to foster a love for reading in my students also.
My favorite verse is from Rev. 21:4. “And God shall wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.”

I have a wonderful career in the educational field and am blessed to be the Director of Polka Dot Garden Preschool here at the elementary campus.  After graduating with a BA from Calvin College, I taught at Alger Park Preschool, then went on to teach Kindergarten at Moline Christian School and later was a preschool teacher and the director of an afterschool program in Hudsonville while my boys were young.  Polka Dot Garden started out as a playgroup and became a preschool before it became a part of Grandville Christian School.  Since then it has also incorporated both English & Spanish Immersion options for parents of preschoolers.  I love early childhood education and I enjoy teaching as well as fulfilling my director role.  One of my greatest joys each day is being able to share the love of Jesus with preschoolers and teaching them how precious they are to God!  My desire is to help each child grow in their faith as they explore the wonders of God and his creation.

My husband Michael and I have three sons.  Two have graduated from Grandville Calvin Christian School and are in college and the youngest is in middle school.  My husband teaches Chemistry and is the Assistant Principal at Calvin Christian High School.  In my free time I love gardening, baking, traveling & reading.

I began teaching in the Polka Dot Preschool three’s classroom in August of 2015.  Previously I substitute taught at GCS in the Spanish Immersion classrooms and taught exploratory Spanish in grades K-8 at Dutton Christian School for twelve.  I have four children who I adore and have loved parenting over the years.  I love Jesus and very much enjoy sharing His love with others at school, home and at church.  I teach a Friendship Bible Class at my church to about 20 neighborhood adults who live with intellectual impairments.  My husband, Gerry, is the pastor of Trinity CRC in Jenison. “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control.”  Gal. 5:22

I began working at Grandville Christian in 2014 and I love it! My job is perfect for me. I work in the Childcare room helping with lunch, reading books, directing play and best of all loving on children!

I have been married to my husband Jim for 26 years.  We have four beautiful children and one amazing son-in-law who have all had the blessing of attending Grandville Calvin Christian Schools; Kelli and Joel Boender (2010), Curtis (2012), Kristi (2015) and Catherine (7th grade).

When I am not at school I love to read, camp with my family and walk my dog in our neighborhood.

I am so grateful to have the opportunity to work with children at GCS. It is such a blessing to have a job that I love in a place where Christ’s light shines!

Janet Krommendyk

Educational Support Specialist

Having taught at four Christian schools prior to coming to GCS, I believe I have landed at one of the best! My work as a certified Reading Recovery teacher and Educational Support Specialist is challenging, gratifying, and rewarding. I work with amazing children and their families at a school that values early intervention and believes that all students can learn. It’s truly a joy and a blessing to be a part of this great community.

When I’m not at school, I enjoy reading and traveling ( which always includes several trips a year to my homeland of British Columbia ) and spending time with my husband, son and daughter-in-law, and our delightful granddaughter.

My alma mater is Calvin College, where I earned my undergraduate degree in English and Elementary Education; later, while teaching in the Los Angeles area, I earned a master’s degree in reading from California State University, Long Beach. After returning to Michigan, I obtained an endorsement in Learning Disabilities from Calvin College.

I thoroughly enjoy the diversity in my work, sharing my passion for my Lord, music and competition, and the opportunities to build relationships with the families at Grandville Calvin Christian Schools.  I am blessed and thankful to have taught here since 2006. In addition to teaching high school choir and orchestra, I also teach middle school choir and orchestra and elementary school orchestra and coach the boys Varsity  and girls JV soccer team.

I am a graduate of Hudsonville and Unity Christian School, and a graduate of Calvin College with a degree in Vocal Music Education.  I am currently a member at LaGrave Ave CRC.

Jenna Martinez

Third grade

After receiving a BA in Spanish, I had the privilege to live in Spain for over 15 years in which I pursued a BA in Education and a Masters in Neuropsychology as well as worked teaching children of all ages.  More importantly, however, we started our amazing family including 4 children who attend GCCS.  We moved from Spain to the States in 2013,  in which I began a Masters in Linguistics at WMU. I started off at GCS teaching 5th grade, and this year I am discovering 3rd grade!  I am blessed to be able to share God´s gift of language with my students and to support them in discovering their own gifts and talents to further His kingdom.

In our free time, our family enjoys traveling and discovering more about God´s great creation, hiking, and just about anything outdoors.

I have spent the past four years teaching at Hope Academy of West Michigan, a pre-school-12th grade charter school near Garfield Park in Grand Rapids.  Though I will greatly miss the students and friends I made at Hope Academy, I look forward to being a part of the Grandville-Calvin Christian School family.  I am teaching Spanish to grades 1-5 and World Cultures to the immersion classes at Grandville Christian Elementary.  On Monday and Thursday I teach Spanish at Calvin Christian Middle School to all grades.

My wife, Kristin, teaches in an Early Childhood Special Education classroom at Ottawa Area Center.  We have two beautiful daughters.  Eva attends Grandville Christian in Preschool Spanish Immersion, and Leonora is 4 months old.

Amber Pearson

Fourth grade

I am very excited to be joining the GCS community this year in 4th grade Spanish immersion. After graduating from Cornerstone University in 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in Language Arts and TESOL, I spent my first four years teaching at Chandler Woods Charter Academy in Belmont as a fourth grade teacher.

 

I developed a passion for learning Spanish during my college years and stopped at nothing to place myself in immersion experiences: living in Mexico for a summer, studying in Costa Rica, traveling to Guatemala, and most recently, returning to Mexico from 2012-2015 to teach preK-6th graders in a children’s shelter outside Guadalajara.

 

When not teaching, I LOVE to read, play the piano or guitar, mountain bike, be outside, play beach volleyball, write, and spend time with friends and family (especially my niece and nephews J)! I am also currently finishing up my master’s degree in Instruction and Curriculum with an emphasis in Educational Differentiation through GVSU.

 

One of my favorite verses is Isaiah 26:3-4: You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in you. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord, the Lord, is the Rock eternal.

I began teaching in the late 1980’s as a high school German, Business and Math teacher. After marrying my husband, Craig, I worked for several years as an HR professional at a German automotive supplier. Staying home to raise our four boys, I eventually returned to teaching in 2009 as a GCS substitute teacher, and a Polka Dot Garden teacher. I now work exclusively in the GCS Childcare Center. I love my work and the people (kids and grown-ups) whom I work with. I see my job as a calling and mission to love the littlest of God’s children and make their non-school time at GCS safe, worthwhile and fun. In my spare time, I like to cook, can, hike, go to the beach and clean closets. My life verse is short and sweet: Psalm 34:1a “I will praise God no matter what happens.” TLB

First grade

I am blessed to be a part of the GCCS staff!  I began teaching here in 1999 as a half-day kindergarten teacher.  I moved to first grade 5 years ago.  Before teaching at Grandville Christian School, I taught first grade for three years in Whitinsville, MA, I taught for two years at Zeeland Christian and then taught fourth grade for three years in California.  I took a few years off to be with my children before coming to teach at GCCS.

I attended Calvin College where I earned both my bachelors degree and my masters degree in the teaching of reading.
My husband, Russ, is an engineer at GE Aviation.  We have three children, a son who is also an engineer, a daughter at Hope College and a son who attends Calvin Christian High School.  As a family we love soccer, camping and hiking.

Katy Rozema

First grade

I have had the privilege of teaching 1st grade in Grandville Christian’s Spanish immersion program since 2010.  Prior to that, I studied Spanish and Bilingual Education at Calvin College and had the opportunity to study abroad in Honduras.  I am currently pursuing my Master’s degree in Educational Leadership at Calvin College.
In April of 2016, my husband, Brian, and I had our first child, and so I am now stepping into the role of Spanish Immersion Coordinator.  I am excited to continue to be a part of the Spanish immersion program working with parents, students, and teachers.

I am a member of the Educational Support Services team. As a licensed Social Worker, I promote social skills and friendship among the students at Grandville Christian School. I also have the privilege of working with teachers to support students facing social emotional challenges that may affect relationships and availability for learning. After earning a BSW from Dordt College, I worked at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital as a pediatric medical social worker. One of my biggest adventures was living in Nigeria for 9 months. In 2002 I co-founded Polka Dot Garden Preschool, where I had the joy of teaching for 12 years. Recently, I received training in Social Thinking curriculum.

My husband David and I have three children. Traveling, hiking, camping, cooking and time with family and friends are a few of my favorite blessings!

I am so blessed to be part of the GCS staff. I am from Cuba where I studied at the Felix Varela University. I have now been living in the U.S. for 7 years and am grateful for all God has done for me. At GCS I had the privilege to teach Spanish Immersion preschool for two years and have now been teaching second grade for six years. I love seeing the second graders learn about God and his world. I have a daughter who is 22 years old and is attending Davenport University. I like to read and write in my free time. My favorite Bible verse is Leviticus 19:33-35. I have been teaching at Grandville Christian for many years and in many roles. I taught first grade, then third grade. I was the librarian for several years, then taught third grade again, sixth grade, and now fifth grade. Grandville Christian is a great place to come…and stay!

I became part of the GCS staff in 1996 after graduating from Calvin College and have been blessed to teach both third grade and second grade.  I also have a Master’s degree in Gifted and Talented Education from GVSU.  I am a native of the Grand Haven/Muskegon area, attend Ridgewood CRC in Jenison, and also have two daughters who are students at GCCS.

Over the years Jeremiah 29:11-13 has been an especially meaningful Bible passage for me in my life and teaching.

Jeremiah 29:11-13 “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me, and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”

As God has called me into each season of life he has shown me how solid and steadfast the truths in this passage really are.  I strive each day to help my students learn how to seek God with all their hearts.

I began teaching at Grandville Christian during the 2012-2013 school year, but have been a part of this community since I entered the doors as a kindergarten student. Prior to teaching third grade Spanish Immersion here, I taught second grade English Immersion at Holy Spirit Episcopal Bilingual School in Tela, Honduras. I obtained my B.A. in Elementary education from North Park University. I am passionate about travel, environmentalism, and social justice. After graduating from Calvin College in 2014 with a BA in secondary education (History and Socials Studies major and French minor), I taught one year at the West Michigan Aviation Academy in Grand Rapids.  

I believe Christian education is essential to raise up the next leaders of the Kingdom of God. I hope to teach my students discernment, compassion, and awareness of their neighbors. As a history teacher, themes of justice, the forward movement of history and the hope for the second coming teach so much about how each of us is to live our lives here in this world as preparation for heaven.

One verse that I love is Acts 20:24  – “However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.”

Vicki DeKryger

Educational Support Specialist

I am delighted to be a part of the Calvin Christian staff as an ESS/Inclusion teacher!  I graduated from Calvin College in 1987 with a degree in elementary education. Over the years, God has blessed me with the opportunity to teach in several Christian schools.  My first teaching position was teaching 3rd and 4th grades at Heritage Christian School.  After working at Heritage for 4 years, I left teaching for a little while to be home with my oldest child, Brandon.  I went back to Heritage for a part-time position teaching math to a group of 5th graders struggling in math and the following year worked as an inclusive ed. teacher.  God provided a wonderful position for me at Eastside Christian, where I taught preschool/kindergarten for 15 years. This was a great situation for my growing family, and over the years I was even able to teach my 2 youngest kids!  

When my children grew a little older, I felt called to go back to Calvin College for my masters in learning disabilities.  Earning my degree in LD was and continues to be a profound joy to me for many reasons.  One reason, which led me to Calvin Middle School, is that I have discovered in my resource room/ESS work that I love working with middle school students!  Prior to taking this position at Calvin, I taught 4 years at Adams Christian School as an ESS/resource room teacher.  

Brandon is 24 years old and has recently become engaged, so we look forward to a wedding next summer!  Sam, my middle child,  is 20 and attends Trinity Christian College.  And my youngest child Kate is 16 years old and attends CCHS.  I am passionate about being my kids’ mom, and love attending their concerts, sporting events, and other activities they may be doing.  Some of my other interests are reading, spending time with friends, and walking with the newest family member, our dog Snickers.

Parents, thank you for entrusting your precious kids to our care.  It is a privilege to teach them about God and his world.  It is a humbling and incredible calling to be a teacher and have the opportunity to speak truth into the lives of students –  young people, new in their faith. If I were to contemplate it too long, I’d never start the day because of this amazing responsibility. But God is faithful!  And, it is His power that makes any teaching I do possible.

A favorite passage is 2 Corinthians 4:6-7.

“For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.

God has called me to the vocation of teaching and to humbly embrace this incredible responsibility.  It is exciting to see students uncovering God’s bidding in their lives and learning how to serve Him.  I believe education is not a path to privilege, but a path to servanthood. I seek to allow students to see there is joy as a follower of Jesus, transformation as we learn our place in His kingdom and hope for the future He has planned for us.  I pray that as I interact with students they will see the fruits of the spirit reflected in how I live and learn and uncover God’s plan and path designed specifically for them.   My life verse is:  Colossians 3:16-17

I graduated from Calvin College in 1995 with a bachelors degree in elementary education with an emphasis in Science and English .  I received my masters degree in education technology from GVSU.  I also periodically take classes in order to continue learning and honing the art of teaching because “when you are through learning you are through.” (John Wooden)

My first  teaching  position was at a Christian school in Indiana.  My wife and I moved back to this area in 1998 and I have been serving Calvin Christian since that time.  While teaching at CCMS, I have taught math, science, Bible, physical education and also coached soccer, track and basketball.

My wife, Sheila, is an amazing Christ follower, friend, mother and fellow teacher who serves God.  She teaches first grade at Holland Christian Schools.  We have three daughters Gentille, Jillian and Alaina  who are bright, energetic, fun loving students at Holland Christian. I am a proponent of play, an educational explorer, a sports enthusiast and a hunter and believe wholeheartedly that love jumps in and does stuff.

It is a true joy to come here each day and to love and learn with such amazing students, families and colleagues. God has blessed me with many years of excellent training in Christian Education. Prior to serving at Calvin Christian, I served at Holland Christian Schools for thirteen years, as a social studies teacher, Gifted and Talented Coordinator and Curriculum Specialist. I attended high school at Holland Christian and received my undergraduate degree from Calvin College in Secondary Education in History, Science and Theatre. I received my graduate degree from Grand Valley State University in Educational Leadership. In all of these places God blessed me with Christian teachers who taught me to love Him first and to serve others.

 

I owe all I am to my Savior and I thank Him for also placing very special people in my life. I have been married to my best friend, Brian, for seventeen years. We have three beautiful children. Silas, Keira and Simeon,  all students at Grandville Christian School. As a family, we love to bike, swim, picnic at the zoo and experience God and His beautiful creation in all that we do.

 

I entered education because I felt God’s strong calling on my life to care for every child that I can. I believe children can be inspired to see God in everything, to desire God in all they do and to serve Him and allow Him to use them to transform the world for Jesus Christ. One of my favorite verses, read at Brian and I’s wedding, is Matthew 6:33, “But seek first His Kingdom and his righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well.” I pray that prayer each morning,seeking God’s Kingdom and not my own that day. This is also my prayer for students. I believe this is why Christian Education exists. Each day we teach students this is not about them, but about an amazing God who chose to let them be a part of the most amazing story.

My teaching career began at Calvin Christian Elementary School upon graduating from  Calvin College.  After teaching there for 21 years I “graduated” to Calvin Christian Middle School in 2007.  During the  middle school  years,  students begin to discover their gifts, who they are in their community and who they are in Christ.  It is a huge privilege to be able to speak truth into the lives of these developing children of God. I have also enjoyed coaching 7th grade basketball for many years at CCMS.

Sixth grade Spanish Immersion

After graduating from GVSU with a bachelors in Spanish with an emphasis in elementary education, I was humbled to receive a position in Rockford’s Spanish immersion program. I taught there for four years before God led me to Grandville Christian School and now Calvin Christian Middle School. I was an immersion student in elementary school who dreamt of being an immersion teacher one day, and God let it happen! I look forward to continuing my journey of learning to be a better teacher here at GCS.

My experience as an immersion student ignited a passion for the Spanish speaking world and I have spent time in various Latin American countries, although Guatemala is nearest to my heart. God even used some friends in Guatemala to introduce me to my now-husband!

When I was in junior high in New Jersey that my own art teacher challenged me to use my talents in service to God and her words made me realize my artistry was not mine but both a gift and a calling.    After graduating from Calvin College with a BA and a MA in Education, I began my career teaching art at Calvin Christian Elementary School which eventually evolved into full-time position here at CCMS.  For over 30 years I have had the privilege of teaching art for grades 1-12 at area Christian schools.

My heart and passion is at this wonderful school.  Calvin Christian Middle is a great place for students to discover their gifts, explore their interests and be involved in opportunities to examine their place in God’s great big world and also be in service to the greater community at large and CCMS.   Our compassionate and professional staff has developed unique programs that make it a pleasure to educate middle school students.  I especially enjoy our exploratory classes in which I can teach different forms of art that don’t get taught in the regular curriculum.

I am married, with two children here on earth and one in Heaven.  I enjoy all kinds of art, of course, but also reading, doing puzzles, cooking and baking, and traveling.  I am constantly humbled by the beauty of God’s magnificent creation and hope to be able to share that kind of wonder through art with my students.  Wherever we are and whatever we do, “What does the Lord require of you but to seek justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God.”  Micah 6:8

I am so happy to be teaching at Calvin Christian Middle School.  God has led me on quite the journey, but I’m glad that I get to be here!  Even though I went to Calvin College to study Biology, God had different plans, and I graduated in 2012 with my teaching degree.  My first experience teaching in my own classroom was at Kalamazoo Christian Middle School, where I taught 7th and 8th grade Math and Science.  It was a wonderful place to start my teaching career, but after a year in Kalamazoo, my wife and I decided to go on an adventure.  We left last August for Honduras, where I worked at a school teaching 5th grade students.  It was an amazing experience, and taught us many things about our professions and each other.

I have the wonderful privilege of teaching Language Arts at Calvin Christian Middle School. I have a passion for sharing God’s gift of language with middle school students, and it is an honor to come alongside students during this exciting time in their lives as they grow and develop their gifts. Encouraging students to become lifelong learners, thinkers, writers, readers, and followers of Christ is a calling that I embrace with joy every day! I am very blessed to be a part of this Calvin Christian Community!

I graduated from Calvin College in 2009 and am working toward my master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction at Calvin as well. God has blessed me with a wonderful husband, Kristopher, who coaches cross country at Kalamazoo College and track at Grand Rapids Christian. We live on the Northwest side of Grand Rapids with our crazy dog, Ellis, and our cat, Minna. In my spare time I love reading, gardening, traveling, outdoor adventures, board games, crossword puzzles, and making music. Kristopher and I are both involved with working with young people at our church, Oakdale Park CRC.

A Bible passage that has been powerful in my life is from Paul’s prayer for the Ephesians in Ephesians 3: I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love,  may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.  Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us,  to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever!

I attended Kalamazoo Christian Schools and graduated from Calvin College with a degree in Education (K-8) and an endorsement in Special Ed (Cognitive Impairment K-12).  I taught 3rd grade in California, then taught in 3rd grade and special ed. classrooms in Madison (WI) Public Schools. I homeschooled my boys for 6 years and then started working at Grandville Christian Elementary.  I have worked in the pre-school and as Educational Support Staff since 2006.

I love working with students with unique gifts and helping them to find their place in this world and also love seeing the faith and acceptance of their Calvin Christian friends and teachers as they learn to do this.

I am married to Dan Kroeze, a pastor and professor at Kuyper College.  We have 3 sons & a daughter-in-law who have all graduated from Calvin Christian, and a daughter who is a Grandville Calvin Christian School student.  In my spare time, I enjoy walking, reading, and knitting.

I thoroughly enjoy the diversity in my work, sharing my passion for my Lord, music and competition, and the opportunities to build relationships with the families at Grandville Calvin Christian Schools.  I am blessed and thankful to have taught here since 2006. In addition to teaching high school choir and orchestra, I also teach middle school choir and orchestra and elementary school orchestra and coach the boys Varsity  and girls JV soccer team.

I am a graduate of Hudsonville and Unity Christian School, and a graduate of Calvin College with a degree in Vocal Music Education.  I am currently a member at LaGrave Ave CRC.

Walking in to our school building and smelling the school air, I am reminded what a blessing it is to serve God at this special place.  Making each student, parent and visitor feel welcome is one of the ways I share Christ’s love at CCMS, along with being a helping hand to staff members.  Being an example of Christ everyday is a way to plant, water and grow the seed of eternal life in our students.  Romans 1:16 is a verse that I hold close to my heart.  There is nothing greater than seeing someone come to know and love Jesus, leave their past life behind and walk in faith. January, 1995 I joined the Grandville Christian School staff as an administrative assistant and in June, 2015 I had the privilege of joining the CCMS staff. Prior to joining the GCS staff, I worked in a variety of physicians offices, after graduating from Davenport College with a Medical Assisting and Secretarial Degree. Counselor

God has led me to Calvin Christian Middle School and High School as the Support and Transition Counselor.  I will be responsible for grades 6-10. God has given me the heart for adolescents who are struggling emotionally and academically. One area of counseling that I strongly believe is important is to teach adolescents how to cope with stress and anxiety in a healthy manner. I look forward to supporting students by referencing scripture and encouraging students to spend time with the Lord.

 

In 2013, I graduated from Hope College with my Bachelor’s in Psychology. I received my Master’s of Education in School Counseling from Grand Valley State University.

 

When I am not at school, I love spending time with my husband, Austin, and my two dogs, Lake and Tahoe.  In addition, I love being with friends and family, fixing and decorating our 1927 house, reading, gardening, yoga, being by Lake Michigan, and enjoying some gluten free pizza. In the summer, I volunteer at the Equest Therapeutic Riding Center where I am able to enjoy my love for working with kids with disabilities and my love for horses.

I have spent the past four years teaching at Hope Academy of West Michigan, a pre-school-12th grade charter school near Garfield Park in Grand Rapids.  Though I will greatly miss the students and friends I made at Hope Academy, I look forward to being a part of the Grandville-Calvin Christian School family.  I am teaching Spanish to grades 1-5 and World Cultures to the immersion classes at Grandville Christian Elementary.  On Monday and Thursday I teach Spanish at Calvin Christian Middle School to all grades.

My wife, Kristin, teaches in an Early Childhood Special Education classroom at Ottawa Area Center.  We have two beautiful daughters.  Eva attends Grandville Christian in Preschool Spanish Immersion, and Leonora is 4 months old.

I am a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian, and a graduate of Calvin College with a degree in Secondary Spanish and English Ed.  I received my k-12 endorsement for Spanish from Aquinas.  I am currently a member at Madison Square CRC.  In my free time, I enjoy playing music, building things, hiking, camping, playing or watching sports, and many other things.  I have too many hobbies to keep up with.

Gail Riddering

Sixth grade Language Arts and Social Studies

For as long as I can remember, I knew I wanted to be a teacher.  Teaching is such a privilege because it combines loving God, loving teaching and loving kids.

In 1999 I joined the staff at Grandville Christian School, having taught the previous nine years at Plymouth Christian.  Throughout the years I have taught a variety of grade levels, including kindergarten, and 4th, 5th and 6th grades. As a child, I attended Grandville Calvin Christian Schools, as did my husband, and received my teaching degree from Calvin College.  My graduate work has been at both GVSU and Western University.

In addition to teaching, my husband and I have been blessed with 5 boys. Besides teaching and spending time with my family, I am an avid runner.  I’ve been running longer than I’ve been teaching.  I’ve lost count of the number of road races I’ve run, but I definitely know the number of marathons – 14.

There are 3 quotes that I try to weave into every part of my teaching, my classroom, and my interactions with students.  The first is from Ps. 139:14 “I will praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made. The second, from Max Lucado’s book, You Are Special, is “I made you and I don’t make mistakes”.  And the third is from the book Wonder,  “Always choose to be kinder than is necessary”.  The classroom climate I strive for is that each student will understand that he/she is a unique child of God and that they will see that in every other student as well.

My position involves teaching 7th grade math to a small group, co-teaching in some math and language arts classes as well as coordinating the after-school tutoring program (CAST).    This requires me to wear many different hats, but my favorite part of wearing each of these hats is the opportunity to always be working with young people, whether it is helping an individual or group of students be successful academically, challenging them spiritually, or listening to a story a student wants to share.

Christian education has been a vital part of my own education background.  I believe christian education prepares students to not only learn about the Word of God, but it helps develop a worldview that is based on the Word of God.   A christian education is truly a blessing to receive and be a part of.

I received God’s call on my life to work with students in the educational setting two years after graduating from high school.  My journey has been very adventurous.  Beginning my college journey at Reformed Bible College (Kuyper College) for two years,  I felt God moving me to Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights, Illinois for two and half years, and completing my Bachelors of Arts degree in Education.   After college, I taught briefly at Andrew High School in Illinois. The following summer I was married to my wonderful, godly husband, Rod Schutte, who is a pastor.  We served at West Side Reformed Church, and I  taught at Calvary Academy in Illinois.  Later, we moved to Michigan to serve a new church, and I taught at Jenison Middle School part-time and coached basketball until we had our first son, Aaron.  Then, I started my career as a stay home mom adding 4 more children to our family, homeschool teacher, basketball coach (4 yrs.), and track coach (14 yrs.) in Northwest Iowa. Later, I began working at Sioux Center elementary school full-time in the Educational Support Services  and tutoring until we were called to serve at Faith Community Church in Wyoming, Michigan.   I subbed at Calvin Christian School  and coached varsity girls’ track for 2 years until I was hired into my current position at CCMS in 2009. I am very blessed to be a part of the staff.  A favorite bible verse of mine is Isaiah 41:9b-10.

I consider it an honor to work with kingdom kids on a daily basis.  The adolescents that fill the halls of Calvin Christian Middle School bring energy, openness and inspiration to each day. Teaching mathematics and Old Testament Bible offers me the unique opportunity to open up the consistency and patterns of God’s created order as well as the patterns and consistency in God’s dealings with His chosen people.  My favorite verses come from one of the Old Testament minor prophet; Lamentations 3:21-26

After growing up in southwest Minnesota and completing my Bachelors in Mathematics for Secondary Education at Dordt College,  my journey took me to Ontario, California and Highland Indiana before coming to Calvin Christian.  Outside of the classroom I have enjoyed opportunities coaching athletes, mathletes and debaters.  At CCMS I currently enjoy working with young leaders on Student Council and Chapel Challenge as well as leading the tech crew for Dessert Theater.

In addition to my teaching role, I am blessed to be a wife and mother.  My husband, Brent, and I have four children, three daughters, Maggie, Josie and Charlotte and a son, JT.  Our family is actively involved in the school community at AnchorPoint Christian School and in the church community at Seymour CRC.  In addition to quality time with my family, I enjoy gardening, quilting, baking and reading.

Since graduating from Calvin College over 25 years ago, I have taken numerous post graduate classes in education at both Western Michigan and Grand Valley.

I am  married to an artist, chef, competitive cyclist, interior designer, and  a high school art teacher at South Christian,  better known as Roberta.  Together we have two boys.  Our oldest, Grant, a 2015 graduate of Calvin Christian, is enrolled at Trinity Christian College and our youngest, Luke, is a Grandville Calvin Christian School student.  My free time is enjoyed by cycling, working on house projects, and good food.

Anna Marie Adema

Music Assistant

Music has been a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember.  Having the honor and privilege of helping others grow in its appreciation, craft, development, enjoyment, performance, and ultimately love and worship of God through it is my heart, joy, and prayer; I truly believe this is God’s call for me and I do not take it lightly.  God has graciously provided me with many opportunities and means throughout the years to grow and develop as a pianist, accompanist, vocalist, choir member, church choir director, as well as private, group, and classroom instructor.

I grew up in South Carolina, but left the warmth of the South to major in English, Music (with a concentration in Vocal Performance), and Theatre at Calvin College.  Since then, I have worked in areas as diverse as accounting, administrative assistance, newsletter publication, and church secretary to my longest commitment (15+ years) of worship coordinating and leading at the inner-city church which I have attended since college and where I met my husband, Nate, who is also blessed to work, minister, and serve in God’s kingdom here at GCCS.  I was officially hired by GCCS in the fall of 2014 most specifically to help with the middle school and high school choirs.  I also oversee the accounting aspects of the music students’ tour fundraising along with other administrative details and responsibilities specific to the music dept.

God has blessed me with a wonderful husband and three treasures for children.  He has also filled me with a huge desire and passion to see prayer mobilized, helping people of all ages become not only people who pray but people of prayer – men, women, and children after God’s own heart.  The life verse God laid on my heart during my own high school years directly connects to transformational prayer:  “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.  Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”  Romans 12:2 (NIV)  I pray this not just for myself but for all believers in my sphere of influence.  I am on a lifelong journey of daily asking God to renew my mind so that I can at all times live in His truth and with the complete peace of Christ that passes all understanding.  May He guide and guard you on yours.

Biology, Media Discernment and Physiology

Teaching children and showing them God’s creation day in and day out is a privilege I love and never take for granted!  I have been teaching at CCHS since 2000, accepting a position here straight out of Calvin College where I majored in Biology and minored in Chemistry.  I am also a Westside Christian School graduate and a Grand Rapids Christian High School graduate.  I am married to Anna Marie Adema, the choir assistant at CCHS, and we have three children attending Grandville Calvin Christian Schools.

In 2012 I joined the staff at CCHS.   Being  blessed by the students and parents that come through our office is one of the favorite parts of my job.  One of my goals is to make each person that walks into the office feel valued.

I am an alumni from Calvin Christian High School and Calvin College.  I have a degree in Social Work and worked at Wedgwood Christian Services for 22 years in a variety of positions.    I was not looking to leave Wedgwood but when I saw the job at Calvin, I knew I was being called here.

My husband, Rodney, works as a commissioned pastor for Community Recovery.   We have two children, Emma and Samuel  who both attend Grandville Calvin Christian Schools.

After graduating from Calvin College in 2014 with a BA in secondary education (History and Socials Studies major and French minor), I taught one year at the West Michigan Aviation Academy in Grand Rapids.  

I believe Christian education is essential to raise up the next leaders of the Kingdom of God. I hope to teach my students discernment, compassion, and awareness of their neighbors. As a history teacher, themes of justice, the forward movement of history and the hope for the second coming teach so much about how each of us is to live our lives here in this world as preparation for heaven.

One verse that I love is Acts 20:24  – “However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.”

I have worked at Calvin since 1986. God has been in charge of my career path from the beginning. Out of college I fully intended to take a job offer in Tennessee when my future mother-in-law suggested I look into Calvin.  I was hired to teach 8th grade Language Arts, and I had my future brother-in-law in class my first year!  Along my teaching trail I have taught 7th and 8th grade Language Arts, American Literature A and B, College Writing, World Literature, English Literature and even Algebra B.  At the middle school I have coached basketball and track. At the high school I have coached JV baseball, JV football, and I was the varsity football coach for thirteen years. In 1992 I became the Athletic Director.

I attended South Christian High School and received a B.A. degree in Education and English from Calvin College. I earned my Masters degree in Secondary Administration from M.S.U. My beautiful wife, Mary,  teaches kindergarten at Grandville Christian. We have four incredible children and one son-in-law, and each one of them has had the opportunity to have a  fantastic Grandville Calvin Christian education.

I am also a licensed builder and my hobby has been building houses for our family to live in. Also I love to read, watch M.S.U. sports, and work in my yard.  One of my favorite passages deals with trusting God today and tomorrow. Matthew 6:19-34, especially the summation in verses 33 and 34.  “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

Dave Dekker

A.P. Calculus, Geometry and Pre-Calculus

Seeing young people discover their gifts and talents over the course of 4 years, and helping students see the logic and creativity present in mathematics is the amazing opportunity that I am privileged to experience. After receiving my Bachelor’s Degree from Calvin College, I received my Master’s Degree from Dordt College.

My wife,  Andrea, and I have three young children that keep us busy.  In my spare time, I enjoy running, reading, working on yard projects, and watching Survivor.  Previously I coached basketball and tennis.

A favorite verse is Philippians 4: 4-7.  4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. This is my 5th year of working at Calvin Christian. I taught at Allendale Christian School for 35 years, spending several summers working with the Michigan Middle School Math Project and coaching the Mathcounts team.  In addition to leading sectionals at MCTM and the Christian Educators Association convention, I coached a variety of sports at Allendale.  I received my Bachelor’s Degree in secondary education from Calvin College with a mathematics major, followed by my Master’s Degree in secondary education from Western Michigan University.  

In addition to teaching, I enjoy playing his baritone horn, singing, reading, and various sports activities.

My favorite verse and motivation in all I do is Colossians 3:23—”Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men.”

Mary Doornbos

Church History, New Testament Survey, Sociology, and Psychology

My passion for learning has been life long. I remember playing “school” before I was able to attend school.  My second grade teacher gave me a pencil that had “Calvin College” imprinted on it. Her words that echo in my mind were, “I think you are going to graduate from there and be a teacher.”

My parents never hesitated in their commitment to provide a Christian school education for their three children although it required great sacrifices on their part. They saw it as part of equipping us for a life of service in God’s Kingdom. I value what I learned at West Side Christian, Grand Rapids Christian High School, and Calvin College where I received my B.A. in education in 1981. My formal education continued at Michigan State University where I earned my M.A. in 1988.

According to some students I have been living under my desk at  Calvin Christian High School since I began teaching in 1981. It is a joy and privilege to be among students each day.

God has challenged me with the opportunity to teach Physical Education, Sociology, Psychology, US and World History, Physiology, New Testament and Church History.  One thing is true and that is that each student who walks into any one of those classrooms matters greatly to God.

I have wonderful godly parents, my dad who is in heaven and my mom who is my best friend. I have a sister who is also in heaven and the best big brother any little sister could ever hope for.

I have friends I call family and my family are my friends.

I enjoy being outside, mowing the lawn on angles, reading, helping others, traveling to Washington D.C. and Alaska and being with people who make me laugh. And I like Mickey Mouse (of course, there is a story behind that).

One of my favorite verses is: “Be still, and know that I am God” Psalm 46:10 In the rush and the noise there is nothing better than just stopping and recognizing who God is and knowing that He has all things in His loving hands. There is no place I would rather be than in His care.

Some of the fastest, rewarding  hours in my week are spent at CCHS.   It is a joy to help prepare the schedule for the games, meets and matches our athletes compete in.  What a privilege it is to see Calvin Christian sports from this perspective!  We are truly blessed to have an Athletic Director who sets a solid foundation and vision for our school’s athletics, and dedicated, caring coaches who take this vision and teach and train our children every day.  We serve a great God who deserves our very best.  Each time our athletes put on a uniform with the name “Calvin Christian” on the front, they have the privilege of reflecting our school and the awesome God we serve.

I have an Associates Degree in Business from Grand Rapids Community College.  My previous experience came from many years working in the Chief of Police’s office in the City of Wyoming.  This is a very different environment to say the least!  My husband, Doug, and I have four children who attend Grandville Calvin Christian School.  

I have many Bible verses that are special to me; but in the context of my job, I would like to share Colossians 3:23-24.  “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward.  It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”

Thelma Ensink

It is a true joy to come here each day and to love and learn with such amazing students, families and colleagues. God has blessed me with many years of excellent training in Christian Education. Prior to serving at Calvin Christian, I served at Holland Christian Schools for thirteen years, as a social studies teacher, Gifted and Talented Coordinator and Curriculum Specialist. I attended high school at Holland Christian and received my undergraduate degree from Calvin College in Secondary Education in History, Science and Theatre. I received my graduate degree from Grand Valley State University in Educational Leadership. In all of these places God blessed me with Christian teachers who taught me to love Him first and to serve others.

 

I owe all I am to my Savior and I thank Him for also placing very special people in my life. I have been married to my best friend, Brian, for seventeen years. We have three beautiful children. Silas, Keira and Simeon,  all students at Grandville Christian School. As a family, we love to bike, swim, picnic at the zoo and experience God and His beautiful creation in all that we do.

 

I entered education because I felt God’s strong calling on my life to care for every child that I can. I believe children can be inspired to see God in everything, to desire God in all they do and to serve Him and allow Him to use them to transform the world for Jesus Christ. One of my favorite verses, read at Brian and I’s wedding, is Matthew 6:33, “But seek first His Kingdom and his righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well.” I pray that prayer each morning,seeking God’s Kingdom and not my own that day. This is also my prayer for students. I believe this is why Christian Education exists. Each day we teach students this is not about them, but about an amazing God who chose to let them be a part of the most amazing story.

I am a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School and Calvin College.  I gradated from Calvin in December 2015 and received a degree in K-12 Special Education: Cognitive Impairment and K-8 Elementary Education.  After graduating I served as a long-term substitute at Calvin Christian High School and am incredibly grateful to now be serving here in a permanent position!

Teaching special education has always been something I have been interested in.  I grew up with five adopted uncles and aunts with varying cognitive, emotional, and physical impairments.  I have grown up with them and watched them grow into incredible, confident adults with great talent and faith in Christ.  As a teacher, I am so excited to watch my students’ confidence in themselves, their talents, and their faith grow during our time together!

Mike Hoekwater

Chemistry and Vice-Principal

Growing up in Jenison in a large family (4 brothers and 3 sisters),  my dad was a bulldozer operator, but digging holes in the dirt didn’t appeal to me like it did for a few of my brothers.  After graduating from Unity Christian High School, I earned a BA in Biology and Chemistry at Calvin College.  Later I earned a Masters degree from MSU in Biological Science.  

 

During my years at CCHS, I have taught various science and math classes, have been the Student Council advisor, and have coached several soccer teams.  One of my favorite things about teaching chemistry is seeing students get excited while watching a cool chemical demonstration or performing an interesting lab activity.  As assistant principal, I see my role as an extension of the parents, guiding and discipling young people as they grow and mature.  

 

When I am not at school, you can find me spending time with my wife Janey, the director of GCCS’s Polka Dot Garden Preschools, and my three sons, Bretton, Grant, and Reece.  As a family, we enjoy camping, spending time at our family cabin in northern Michigan, along with watching Tigers baseball or Spartan football and basketball.  To refresh my soul, I fly-fish for trout in local streams.  I also enjoy reading, completing crossword puzzles, and listening to classic music (classic rock, that is).  

 

My prayer for my students is the prayer of the Apostle Paul for the Philippians in Philippians 1:9-11:  “And this is my prayer:  that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ–to the glory and praise of God.”

Sara Hoeve

English

n 2007 I joined the teaching staff at Calvin Christian.  I graduated from Calvin College with my BA in English and History.  I also received my Masters in English Education from Western Michigan.  Currently, I am taking classes for my Phd. in English Education at WMU.

 

As a teacher of writing and literature, my role is to help students embrace the God-given gift of language.  My English pedagogy centers around the belief that English classrooms must be a place where students feel invested, challenged and celebrated in their writing and reading.  My first goal is that my students are able to see themselves as writers, to be able to communicate their experience and ideas clearly and confidently, to feel as if they have something to say and the right to say it.  My second goal is for students to use these skills to understand the relationship between themselves and their world, to explore their identity and community.

 

My time away from school revolves around my husband Mitch, and our children, Grace, Austin and Jackson.  I keep busy doing laundry and driving my kids everywhere.  I also love to serve in the youth programs at Evergreen Ministries.  If I have free time, I enjoy my Book Club, camping and yoga.

Mike Jacobs

General Woods, Graphic Communications, Introduction to Engineering and Physical Science

I absolutely love being able to teach from a Christian perspective.  While teaching about God’s creation, it’s a joy to be able to explain just how much God must love us to set up such a wonderful creation to delight in and also be curious about.  Walking with students in their faith walk, sharing with them struggles and victories that we see around us every day, along with talking about science in the classroom is a true joy.

 

I am a graduate of Holland Christian High School.  After graduating from Dordt College with a degree in Biology and a Teaching Degree,  I received a Masters in Educational Technology from Central Michigan University. I have taught at Denver Christian, Calvin Christian, and have had the blessing to do two summer workshops in China.

 

One of my favorite bible verses is Galatians 5:1 It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.  Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.

Matt Jewett

English

Before coming to Calvin Christian, I taught English for ten years at Kalamazoo Christian High School where I commuted from Wyoming.  Before that, I worked as an adjunct instructor at Boston College, Calvin College, and Grand Rapids Community College.  During this time, I also worked as a part time adult ed teacher at the Van Buren County jail.  

I have my Master’s in English from Boston College and my Bachelor’s degree with a double major in English and Communication Arts from Cornerstone University.  

I am married to Sara Jewett and have two high energy but wonderful children: Blake and Adele.  Sara is the diaconal coordinator at Calvary Christian Reformed Church where she focuses on benevolence, community relationships, and outreach.  I am the discipleship elder and a youth group leader at Calvary CRC.  Netflix tells me that I love “mind bending science fiction”, “period pieces featuring a strong female lead,” and “fight the system movies.”  I also love binge reading, playing chess with my son, interpretive dancing with my daughter, directing theatre, and eating pizza rolls.  

As teacher I want my student to “own” their thoughts.  I don’t want their thoughts to exist in a bubble but to have them participate in discourse communities that go beyond the walls of the classroom.  I want to prepare them with the right questions to ask their culture and their communities.  And, most importantly, I want them to “own” their faith walk and to help disciple them into a deeper relationship with God.  A verse that I’m still trying to live out is Philippians 4:12: “I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation.”

I am grateful for and excited about the opportunity to serve as the Dean of Student Life at Calvin Christian High School.  Before joining CCHS in this role, I served as a pastor at Mars Hill in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where I worked on the kids, students, and adult ministry teams for over a decade.  I am a graduate of Kuyper College and Grand Rapids Theological Seminary, and have lived and studied in the Middle East.  I am a Certified Trainer for the Fuller Youth Institute at Fuller Theological Seminary and have served on the Editorial Board for the Institute for Youth Ministry at Princeton Theological Seminary.  I’m also a sports-enthusiast, joke-teller, and food-snob.
My wife, Stephanie, and I have two young children and we live in Jenison, Michigan.  We love offering hospitality, eating good food, being at the beach as much as possible, spontaneous adventures, and exploring nature.

I thoroughly enjoy the diversity in my work, sharing my passion for my Lord, music and competition, and the opportunities to build relationships with the families at Grandville Calvin Christian Schools.  I am blessed and thankful to have taught here since 2006. In addition to teaching high school choir and orchestra, I also teach middle school choir and orchestra and elementary school orchestra and coach the boys Varsity  and girls JV soccer team.

I am a graduate of Hudsonville and Unity Christian School, and a graduate of Calvin College with a degree in Vocal Music Education.  I am currently a member at LaGrave Ave CRC.

Emily Nelson

Counselor

God has led me to Calvin Christian Middle School and High School as the Support and Transition Counselor.  I will be responsible for grades 6-10. God has given me the heart for adolescents who are struggling emotionally and academically. One area of counseling that I strongly believe is important is to teach adolescents how to cope with stress and anxiety in a healthy manner. I look forward to supporting students by referencing scripture and encouraging students to spend time with the Lord.

 

In 2013, I graduated from Hope College with my Bachelor’s in Psychology. I received my Master’s of Education in School Counseling from Grand Valley State University.

 

When I am not at school, I love spending time with my husband, Austin, and my two dogs, Lake and Tahoe.  In addition, I love being with friends and family, fixing and decorating our 1927 house, reading, gardening, yoga, being by Lake Michigan, and enjoying some gluten free pizza. In the summer, I volunteer at the Equest Therapeutic Riding Center where I am able to enjoy my love for working with kids with disabilities and my love for horses.

Dan Olthoff

Algebra, Geometry and Physics, and Girls' Varsity Head Coach

Although I was born in Grand Rapids, I grew up in California and Florida. I attended Calvin College where I received a degree in Engineering in 2000. While I was finishing that program I felt God strongly calling me into education, so after graduation I continued at Calvin where I got my secondary teaching endorsement with a major in Mathematics and a minor in Physics. I had the privilege of student teaching at Calvin Christian HS in the fall of 2001. After completeing this assignment I was offered a full time position, and have since taught Physics, Precalculus, FST, Statistics, Geometry, and have now started teaching Algebra as well. I have also received a Master’s Degree in Mathematics from Grand Valley State University.

During my time at Calvin I have also coached over 30 seasons in a variety of sports (golf, basketball, track, and bowling) and been a Young Life leader. I consider a wonderful privilege and responsibility to be member of this community at Calvin Christian HS.

Pete Overvoorde

PE, Boys' & Girls' Varsity Bowling Coach

In 2006 I joined the CCHS staff and since then have had the privilege of talking to young students about the importance of physical health and wellness and how those things can directly and indirectly influence a person’s ability to serve the Lord. Not only do I do this through teaching, but I try to model this by living a lifestyle reflective of the physical gifts and abilities God has blessed me with. Prior to teaching at Calvin Christian, I taught both elementary and middle school health and physical education in other schools. I also was able to interact with diverse groups of kids while serving as Coordinator for Pre-College Programs at Calvin College. In addition to teaching, I currently serve as the boys and girls bowling coach, and have also held the post of the head boys track and field coach for a number of years.
I am a father of three amazing young children, who also share a love of fun and physical activity. Mountain biking and road biking are two of my favorite hobbies. To me, there is nothing like getting a great workout in while enjoying the wonderful landscape God has painted for us all to enjoy. Other than that, I love to live vicariously through my children by cheering for them at soccer, volleyball, and basketball games. A favorite saying of mine is, “Things turn out best for the people who make the best of the way things turn out”.

My life has been blessed by being part of the Calvin Christian School community since October of 2003.  My post-high school education was one semester at Davenport College and then I felt led to look for an actual secretarial job rather than continue with school.  My secretarial career has been uniquely all in school-related positions at Reformed Bible Institute/College (now Kuyper College), Ferris State College, Calvin College, and Creston Christian Elementary/Middle School.  The circle of working in each grade/age related field of education has now been completed since coming to Calvin Christian High School.

 

I enjoy interacting with people and my position at CCHS allows me to meet, greet, and assist people who come through the doors of our office.  My goal is to see each person I meet as a person uniquely created by God and to convey God’s love to them in the way that I assist them, no matter what that task may be.  A favorite little quote/prayer I strive to live by is “Lord, make my life a window for your light to shine through and a mirror to reflect your love to every person I meet.”  

 

I’ve been married for 43 years on September 9, 2015 to my best friend.  Jerry & I have a married daughter, Rachel, and they have blessed us with our one grandchild, Leah, who is almost 6 years old.  Our son, James, lives and works in Tokyo, Japan.  We are actively involved in our church family at Blythefield CRC in Rockford where I am the Congregational Life Coordinator.  This involves creating, planning, and presenting opportunities and activities for our members to participate in which build relationships and help demonstrate encouragement and support to each other.  Favorite pastimes include playing the piano, reading, and hanging out with my granddaughter.  

 

My “life verse” can be found in Psalm 34:13-14a: But I will say, “You are my God; I will trust in You.  My times are in Your hands.”  God has my life’s journey all in His care and keeping.  Wow!  That’s pretty awesome to know.

Susann Shultz

Spanish

My love for languages and cultures began back when I was a student in high school and continued as I studied at Calvin College, where I majored in Spanish K-12 secondary education and minored in bilingual education.  I had the opportunity to travel and live in both Spain and Mexico while in college, and enjoy incorporating what I learned from those cultures into my teaching.  I received my Masters of Education from Grand Valley State University in 2010.  My favorite part of teaching is helping students learn to appreciate and have a love for all of God’s people.  I am also co-leading the International Club

 

My husband, Rob, and I live in Wyoming with our two children.  Besides Spanish and cultures, some of my hobbies include reading, cooking, photography and traveling (in fact, I traveled with Calvin Christian students to Spain in 2006, 2009 and 2012).  Our family attends South Harbor church in Byron Center.

I have a passionate heart for our Savior, Jesus, and feel blessed to be able to help guide students in a Christ centered biblical education setting. It brings me much joy to help equip students in using their gifts and abilities which God has given them in preparing to work and serve in their communities.

 

In 2015 I joined the staff at CCHS after being a Social Studies teacher, an At-Risk and Blended learning educator and a Guidance Counselor at Mona Shores High School.  I received my B.A. in Secondary Education along with my M.A. in counseling and psychology from Western Michigan University.

It is an incredible blessing to be able to study the Bible together and ask big questions about what it means to follow Jesus and live in his Kingdom in today’s society. I hope my students leave my classes with a deeper love for Christ and a desire to take part in his “new creation” work as his Body. I began my career at Calvin Christian in 2009,  right out Calvin College, where I graduated with Religion and History majors. I am now currently pursuing a M.A. in Bible & Theology at Calvin Theological Seminary.

My wife, Abbie, is the After-School Care Director at Grandville Christian School. We have been married for five years and have two children who we love spending time with.

Hobbies and interests of mine include the Bible (!), reading, music, sports, and announcing CCHS football and basketball games.

A favorite passage of mine is Isaiah 52:7-10, specifically verse 7, which reads “How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of the messenger who announces peace, who brings good news, who announces salvation, who says to Zion, ‘Your God reigns.’”

Becky Teusink

Chemistry and Physical Science

I grew up in New Jersey where I attended Eastern Christian School.  I graduated from Calvin College in 1999 with a Biology Major, Chemistry Minor and a secondary education teaching certificate.  After Calvin I attended graduate school from 1999-2001 at Purdue University’s School of Agriculture where I completed a Masters in Biochemical Genetics.  I started teaching at Calvin Christian in 2015 after teaching at Purdue, Twin Lakes HS (Monticello, IN), West Ottawa HS and Holland Christian HS.  

My husband Mike and I were married in 1999.  We moved to Holland in 2003 to raise our children on his family’s farm.  We have 3 children, Henry, Anna and Luke who attend Zeeland Christian School.  We love spending time outside, especially any activity near or in a lake.  We are members of Providence Church where I have been active in Women’s ministry, teaching Sunday School and Small Groups.  

I love learning new things about Science and hope that excitement comes through in my classroom.  As I learn more I am continually amazed by the detailed way God has created us and the world around us.  In my classroom I strive to not only teach students Science but also how to take that knowledge and link it to our Biblical calling to be stewards of creation and our school mission of Loving, Learning and Serving.

Kathy Tietz

Educational Support Assistant

I have been blessed with the opportunity to work with a special group of kids, in both middle school and high school, helping them find their God given potential with their unique learning style, or reminding them how all of us are loved by a wonderous, loving God.  I couldn’t love working with these kids more!  I have a Bachelor of Science from Western Mich University, with a major in communications and a minor in social psychology.  It was through God’s path for me that I found this awesome calling in my life.  I worked previously with special needs children for eight years, before taking time off to have my youngest child, six years ago.

I am a busy mother of four beautiful girls and enjoy working as an independent consultant with Thirty-One Gifts.  Since I grew up along the shores of Lake Michigan, I have a love for lighthouses.  One of my favorite verses reminds me of the light that guides those on the water to safety…John 8:12.  “Then Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world.  He who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of Life.”

John Timmer

Algebra, Statistics and Registrar

I have the unique story that I have been a teacher at Calvin Christian two different times.  I began my teaching career here at Calvin and remained on staff for six years.  I then had a nine year stay at Holland Christian.  In 2010 I felt a strong calling by God to return to CCHS.  I have been teaching mathematics and serving as the registrar since my return to CCHS.  It is wonderful to have a career where I am confident God wants me to be and where I can use the gifts He has given me to serve others.  I am excited to be here to prepare students to see the gifts God has given them, develop their gifts, and begin to see where God is calling them to use their gifts in the future.

I earned my bachelor’s degree from Calvin College and my master’s degree from Grand Valley State University.  Currently at Calvin Christian I teach mathematics at the high school and serve as registrar for grades six through twelve.  I have also had roles as both the girls and boys varsity swim coach, head of chapel committee, and student council advisor.

My wife Becci and I were married in 1999.  We have three children.  I enjoy watching and participating in many different sports – especially soccer and swimming.  I am often involved in various activities at our church.  In addition, I spend some time as an adjunct instructor at Davenport University.

A verse that gives direction to my life is Colossians 3:17, “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”  It is great reminder that every moment of our lives is to bring glory to God and to praise Him for his amazing blessings to us.

Corry Vander Sluis

Foods and Spanish

Teaching at Calvin Christian is what God has prepared me for and where God wants me right now. I grew up in a home where Dutch was spoken by my parents.  They thought that no one could understand their secrets. Little did they know that one of their kids had a knack for picking up languages. That background helped me learn Spanish and love it. I studied in Spain even before Calvin College had their international study abroad program. I have also studied in Mexico for several summers. I received my master’s degree in from The School for International Training in Brattleboro, Vermont. All of these experiences helped me to learn to speak and teach Spanish.

 

I have taught Spanish at every level possible, from high school, to homeschool, to college classes and then to preschool Spanish immersion. I am thankful to be back in the high school and work at Calvin Christian where we can laugh and learn from each other.

 

I am married to David Vander Sluis and we live in Holland. Dave is an electrician  We have three children, Sam, Becky and Mary.  We love family time together and hiking, walking along Lake Michigan and biking.

Ashley VanSchepen

Algebra, Personal Finance and Statistics

Calvin Christian has been a great place to work since I joined the staff in 2007.  It is a joy to come to work each day and teach students that strive to understand God’s hand in the world around them and in their own lives.  I enjoy seeing students develop academically, spiritually, and emotionally over their high school careers as they become more confident, independent thinkers. 

I earned my Bachelor’s degree at Calvin College and my Master’s degree through Cornerstone University.  I am married to my husband, Nick, who has taught me to be a Maple Leafs fan.  In my spare time, I enjoy reading, walking my dog, playing cards, and hanging out with family and friends.  I attend Ada Bible Church, where I have been going for the last 15 years.  In all I do, I strive to live out Micah 6:8, “And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”

Steve Weeda

In 2012, I was called to teach at Calvin Christian High School. I have also been helping with the Student Leadership Committee and organizing CloseUp trips to Washington, D.C. In addition to teaching here, I also appreciate this community that has accepted and involved my family as we transplanted here and as all three of my children now attend, or graduated from, Grandville Calvin Christian Schools.
In 2012, I was called to teach at Calvin Christian High School. I have also been helping with the Student Leadership Committee and organizing CloseUp trips to Washington, D.C. In addition to teaching here, I also appreciate this community that has accepted and involved my family as we transplanted here and as all three of my children now attend, or graduated from, Grandville Calvin Christian Schools. Before Calvin Christian, I had the privilege of teaching and coaching in amazing Christian schools in diverse geographic and cultural contexts including Florida (1990-1992), New Mexico (1994-2008) and Indonesia (2008-2012).
My favorite verses are Matthew 28:19-20 (the Great Commission) and Micah 6:8. These verses concisely convict us to call others and ourselves to Biblical redemption and justice.
